They do *now* - they didn't in the past: http://www.hazegray.org/features/rok/rok-dd05.jpg Likewise the RN have used the black scheme as well: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/davids_world_2011/6090366112/ I'm not sure if there is some kind of "common pool" in effect which means the units - or parts...

Z-drives and other odd arrangements are used quite a bit for small ferries. They have additional losses in the gearboxes, but they are very compact, which increases the money-making volume of the ship. This is an example of how technical inefficiency of an individual system is acceptable if it leads...

That's a lot of questions... For a given propeller and thus shaft RPM, a wider diameter shaft will have a higher "linear" speed in the bearings, which is going to increase friction losses. In normal operation, the minimum diameter of the shaft is going to be limited by the torque it needs to carry, ...

Actually long shaft runs can be a real pain. They take up more space than you think, require expensive watertight openings in the bulkheads (which for warships have to remain watertight after whipping due to underwater explosions, or even just the ship hogging or sagging if they are long in proporti...

But why real Great Britain throw money on their Nimrod AEW instead of doing this above? Because BRITISH that's why. More seriously, the riskiest option was chosen seemingly because it was the most British in work content, and so supported industry and the industry lobby. This has been a frequent tr...

RE: Ski Jumps. I wouldn't be so sure about it not being needed. In the CVS it wasn't just about improving MTOW - a ski jump ensures that the aircraft will leave the deck in a positive rate of climb even in rough weather. I am told this is reassuring for the pilots. This is an issue for STOVL due to ...

RE: Radars, at a guess they would have used two illuminators, one forward and one aft, a medium range 3D radar on the top of the foremast and a long range 2D radar on the aft mast. The domes may have been to provide weather protection. If the Noreskort consortium wasn't tied into any Big Name, then ...
