Both the P-40 Warhawk and the F4F Wildcat did pretty good against superior enemies. As long as you use them the right way anything can be quite deadly. Remember, it was the weak Sherman that killed the mighty King Tiger.
F8F good armed ? no ... he have only 4x50 cals with most of his counters use 20 mm cannons. Fastes piston ? also no ... Sea Fury was better. F8F-2 max speed was 730 km/h not 840 km/h. He was not good armed, not well armored, but indeed with good range. EDIT: models B and F-2 fly with 20 mm cannons ...
