The 4 company rifle battalion establishment was common to all Commonwealth armies. It meant that a battalion attack allowed 2 companies up front, one behind to give depth and 1 in reserve. While I may have a spectacular reputation for advertising my ignorance and am aware that the Brits were experiencing serious manpower difficulties by late 1944, I am pretty sure that the British Infantry Battalion was a 4 rifle company establishment, rather than a 3.
