I've not done very well with keeping up with this thread. I'm sorry to say that your lengths for these ships are not right. I've only checked A and B3 in detail, but: 1. The lengths for ALL the ships given in D'Eyncourt's Notebook are "between perpendiculars". That is from the rudder post to the poi...
@Keisser "For example, arm King George V with 381-mm cannons and cut it's belt a some to make it a battlecruiser and smth like that... That would be wonderful."
You mean Design 15C of late 1935? See http://www.shipbucket.com/forums/viewto ... g+george+V
I think the answers you have had essentially say that the function of cruisers between the wars were the same as in WWI and before. I suspect that your question could be reworded? "Would it be possible for ships designed within the inter-war treaty limits to actually fulfil the traditional functions...
@Krakatoa: thanks for posting Minotaur. @Hood. I think your 7.5in turret is indeed a good representation. There is a good photograph of Warrior directly beam-on in Dingle's book "British Warships 1860-1906" p165. It's an interesting one from around 1910 when only the forefunnel was raised. B4 all 6i...
Thanks Krakatoa. Yes. But that's the one I can't get to view. 404 error for me. I'd like to see it if possible. But I have worked the other way round and put Hood's turret on Black Prince after altering the size to match the scale. Hood's turret fits very well, just the right 7.5/9.2 = 0.815 ratio, ...
Another great set of cruisers, Hood. I'm glad you didn't try replacing the 7.5in turrets with central pivot mounts. I don't know what got into my thinking. B4 looks almost modern. Incidentally HMS Birmingham had two 6in side by side on her forecastle, but the original scheme (design 1912) was for on...
I've sent Hood copies of the original drawings in Tennyson d'Eyncourt's notebook. Others in books based on them are not quite accurate. But I've also looked at the text, and withdraw any suggestion that the mounts were central pivot and not turrets. The text clearly says gunhouse armour 4in for the ...
Hood is quite right. My apologies for getting carried away answering questions and forgetting we were on the Atlantic cruisers thread. Also I've got a bit more to say about those, as looking at the text of what I've got rather than at the pictures, I think Hood's turrets are nearer to what was inten...
As I said above: There is really only a very crude Workbook sketch and brief written descriptions to go on for the 3x4 9.2in cruiser designs, which in profile would have looked rather like the triple 8in ships, though bigger. The sketch is in WG John's Workbook - part of his notes on a meeting at wh...
