Alakai and Hulakai are two high speed ferries built by Austal USA for Hawaii Superferry in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Hulakai differs from her sister by having a stern ramp.

In March 2009 the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that the operation of the vessels without an environmental review was unconstitutional. Hawaii Superferry filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection shortly thereafter.

In early 2010 both ships assisted the Haiti earthquake relieve efforts, under the direction of the United States Maritime Administration. Both ships were purchased on a auction by the Maritime Administration the same year.

Beginning 2012 they were transferred to the Navy. Both vessels were renamed. Huakai became HST-1 USNS Guam and Alakai became HST-2 USNS Puerto Rico. Guam will be used to ferry troops and equipment to their training areas near Okinawa. She’ll be replacing the chartered Westpac Express on that station. What to use Puerto Rico for is not yet the determined.

I am not 100% sold on the bridge window edges, but I'm not sure how to fix them without serious distortion, so I simply say, excellent job.

Great work!
But I'm concerned with window edges too. Maybe at least try to mark the outer sides of edge-most ones with standard 3-pixel thick frames?

I’ve played a bit with the framing of bridge Windows. So far I’ve come up with these options.

Option 1 corrects only for some basic mistakes I’ve noticed upon closer inspection of photographic evidence. Bad me...
Option 2 tries to enhance the window framing on the bridge wings only.
Option 3 enhances the bridge wings and front window.
Option 4 goes for full framing of the windows.
Option 5 is an attempt at “soft framing”.

I like option 5 best but don’t know whether this is within guidelines.

I'd go for either 3 or 4

I would go for 2, 4 of an mix of those 2. 5 is allowed by the guidelines if nothing else is possible (for example, http://shipbucket.com/images.php?dir=Re ... Kievit.png) but that seems not to be the case here.
option to explore (the abovementioned mix) would be to have the 'side facing' windows get the full, 3 pixel bars, and the 'front facing' windows having the single black bar. the problem is, with rounded shapes as these, were to put the switch between those 2 without getting an quite hard 'bend' in the looks. (one bar of option 5 to avoid this would not be weird to me, but I am not the one to decide this of course)

note that the other superstructure windows at the front suffer from the same problem, btw.

your effort to imrpove an already great drawing is commendable, btw. keep up the good work!

I like option 5, but I think option 3 is the best looking while being the least-far from a strict interpretation of the shipbucket standard.

Option 5 has shades on top... Which isn't SB standard.

Thank you, for your valuable hints, comments and opinions.

I’ve played some more with the bridge structure and found a solution which represents essentially what acelanceloet described above.

Changes done:
- reworked bridge structure
- reworked forward lounge windows
- added ride control surfaces
- some tweaking to the paint jobs

Very nice, but I can't upload them unless you put them in the thread!
