There is no need to move away from the standard railing in both shape and coloring.

When you color the railing out from grey, only do it when the railing faces superstructure or equipment of that same range of color in the background.
But when it faces only the pure ocean air behind, then stay with the standard grey .

Also, the railing with two middle lines with only one pixel between is heretic, and should not be used, as it makes the ships look ugly and non-shipbucketish.

ALVAMA, great drawing of the JAHRE VIKING! I guess this ship changed configuration many times over its career due to rebuilds and refits, but ever since she received the new deckhouse during her rebuild into the JAHRE VIKING, her bridge actually protruded forward from the superstructure. Also, she had derricks instead of cranes. Check out these shots: http://www.aukevisser.nl/supertankers/id23.htm

Keep up the good work!

Gollevainen?
The railing on the helipad's are allowed to use right?
They look way more like real life railings then the square boxes (with one pixel cut of from the corners) and empty for the rest.
