Nice one Charybdis I only have one question; that is, how did they get the seaplanes back on the launch deck? I don't see any cranes that could do it, unless it was a one-shot operation? |

I think when it came to the large flying boats she was more of a transport and would have used shore-side cranes. She had a couple smaller cranes to bring planes up to the hanger deck from the looks of it. The pictures I've seen of her carrying large boats usually have them partially disassembled. http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/02/0203.htm |

That is correct CanisD. The Langley was used as a transport ship for aircraft, before and during WW2 until the time of her sinking. In fact, at the time of the sinking Langley was carrying P-40 Warhawks to a Pacific airbase IIRC. After Langley was coverted into a tender, the planes were loaded onto the deck by cranes. That's also the reason they Langley kept the rear section of the flight deck, to make more space for the carrying of aircraft. -EZ- |

Here is Langley before she was converted into an aircraft carrier as USS Jupiter. Thanks to Canis D for his excellent references. |
