The next step of putting aircraft to sea was the building of a purpose built ship, a collier was converted while on the ways into the first aircraft carrier. HMS Ark royal had a big flying off deck forward, from which aircraft could take-off, but landing was a different matter. And so the Ark Royal usually had only seaplanes. The ship took part in the Dardanelles campaign and after the war was used for catapult test and in 1934 was renamed HMS Pegasus, to free her name to the new aircraft carrier then building. After WW2 the Pegasus was sold to commercial interests but the cost of converting the ship for mercantile use caused her owner to bankruptcy and so in 1950 the ship was scrapped.
Oh yes, HMS Ark Royal carried a sail to help her in keeping herself into the wind, and so was the only aircraft carrier to have a sail.
