I have always wondered is it possible to do one black line and one dark gray line next to it...
Some has used this, but its not correct way, since it kinda borderlines itself to the gradient world. The skill in SB style sort of highlights itself into how one deals with small details.

Pity I can't see it. Might be restricted in my country.

This is a very impressive first drawing.
Apart from the mast issue I can't see anything else that would need correcting and I think this is a very fine drawing.
I'm quite happy with the broadside 6in as many 19th century cruisers had that layout and most drawings always show them trained 90 degrees (i.e. towards the viewer).

Hello again, everybody and thanks for your critiques. I was well chuffed that Galatea has been moved into the Real Designs board. Special thanks to Rowdy36 for his link to the Project Sail board where I was able to look at how people dealt with masts and I have made some sort of analysis of the techniques used:

1. It would seem that vertical masts benefit from a perpendicular aft side with a tapered fore side, terminating in three pixels at the cap.
2. T'gallants and topmasts seem to favour a parallel rendering with three pixels at the cap. This can result in a five-pixel lower mast at the board which is pretty much to scale for a large sailing ship although perhaps a bit heavy for the mizzen.
3. It is the single-spar raked mast that seems to face the biggest problems. I think that these have been best represented with two pixels at the cap although it results in two or three segments at the top being double black lines.
4. I found one effective example of a two-line, two-colour rendering with a black line aft and a lighter colour forward. This might have worked well with Galatea's dark brown topmasts.
5. Upper spars seem to ignore the problem altogether and settle for a double black line as being acceptable. Where stuns'l booms and irons are drawn, they look very acceptable.
6.Nobody did it the way I did it so I'll not do that again!

Excellent work Jellicoe, looking fowards to further things from you! You rendition of the Galatea looks great, might I offer some advice though :)

*The stern might need some shading as it is a rounded surface

*I don't know if you've seen this rather glorious picture of her sister HMS Australia which perfectly outlines her hull details and other bits and pieces including an elaborate stern scroll as well as good view of the lower rigging

*The strut that connects the bottom of the rudder to the skeg is missing part of it's black outline, I know it plays with the scale but part of SB-standard.

*Might want to find out how the prop shafts meets the hull, not certain it's a flush fit

all in all though, supreme effort
