Very nice addition, and I also join Golly's wish for more. Unfortunately your caption of the ship is wrong. DD-438 was Ludlow, and on the hull of your drawing you said it is 483 which was the first Aaron Ward. Also, note that the Gleaves class were equipped with a half shield 5" gun mountings aft, as originally built the aft mountings were open. |

Thanks all. After further review of the scarce available photos I've found out that the air search radar the ship was fitted with during late 1942 was the SC (and not the SA as plans indicate).

Yes, it was a typo. I was in a hurry to get this one out the door before I had to leave for the night - fixed.
Also, note that the Gleaves class were equipped with a half shield 5" gun mountings aft, as originally built the aft mountings were open.
Some of the later units built at Federal were fitted with the Mark 30 Mod 0 mount shield (fully enclosed) on mount 53. Other ships had open topped gun mounts covered with canvas dodgers; others still had open mounts. I will try to draw versions of each configuration, as usual.This photo shows DD-483 in late 1942 - enclosed Mk.30 Mod.0 mount visible. Re: the camouflage for this ship, unfortunately from the whaleboat aft it's a "best guess" - no available photos of the starboard side of the ship with its Measure 12 modified camouflage seem to exist. If anyone has one, please let me know ASAP. |
