Do you know why the aft torpedo launcher has the crew shelter? It had been my understanding that this was provided on the Fletchers to protect the crew from the blast of the nearby 5/38 muzzle, but the Gearing configuration isn't nearly so closely coupled.
From what I've read it's the same reason, though I can see your point. I imagine if the guns are trained to 90 degrees outboard there would be blast danger to the crew of that torpedo tube were it trained inboard. At any rate, most of the 710s lost that set of torpedo tubes by mid-1945 (if they were even launched with them to begin with).

Figured as much, but you're better read on this class than I am ;)

One last submission to this thread, and somewhat breaking my "nothing postwar" rule, though this is a very minor refit. ;)

This is GEARING (DD-710) in March of 1947, with the overall Haze Grey of the Measure US 27 (formerly Measure 13) camouflage. This was the standard haze grey scheme applied to all USN ships after World War II (even up to today).

GEARING's immediate postwar appearance shows some interesting additions, most notably the SR air search antenna on the foremast, along with a large outgrowth of tactical radio antennas. The "old reliable" Sugar George surface search is still present. DBM radar direction finder radomes have been added on a small yard ahead of the no.2 stack, and "sword" RCM antennas have been fitted aft of the forward stack, with their companion "derby" antennas on the yards. Ventilation systems have been slightly updated, and all 20mm single mounts have been replaced by twin mounts. Otherwise the ship is nearly identical to its "as built" appearance.

An awesome thread and may I beg your indulgence for some DDR conversions? Some of them were made during the war itself after all.
