Good day everybody. This is my first attempt at making a real design, and also my first foray into the world of ships badges.

The old Zumwalt drawing is not really satisfactory, having been made many years ago when the only sources available were artist's impressions of dubious accuracy. So I took the opportunity to make a revised version, correctly scaling it and taking advantage of high resolution photos of the actual ship to get the details right. She's a very troubled ship but she still deserves a good rendering in The Bucket.

Many thanks to all the people who helped critique the Work In Progress.

a nice update

a troubled ship, is quit normal for ships (and other things that are pushing the limit). For example in Norway we build the Skjold class, some are off similar idea of Stealth technology and advancement but they choose mostly the latest in off the shelf parts except in some situations. the first ship was commissioned in 1999 and had to be redesigned later on, other ship in that class, was commisioned after 2010. they used 9 years to fix problems with the first ship, among them was the powerplant problems. they didn't have the leakage problems, due to they used purpose build water-jet, but the gearbox wasn't able to handle the raw power from 2 small and 2 large turbines (and originally 2 diesel engines) working together trough a Z-drive and down on the gearbox, at max power it ...basically the gearbox literally exploded, they went trough 4 gearboxes, solution was a combined Z-drive-gearbox designed by a small local firm, the gearbox is more expensive then rest of the powerplant...

There will always be problems with something new, with Zumwalt they are pushing technology, "that much to that cost", will have a lot of problems, but my bet is that within a couple off years, all problems might be fixed and she can finally show here capability. US-Navy have the luxury of building and improving existing Arleigh Burke class, it's not pushing anything, it mostly use what are already proven tech.

I'm not really a fan of the design, but her Captain's name is James Kirk, so she does have some level of awesomeness. :D

It's certainly more detailed, but it's hard to say for sure (at least from where I sit) whether it's more accurate. The Navy has been frustratingly reluctant to share good photographs -- the last stuff posted to navy.mil (or on Navsource) dates to 12/2016!

Nice to see the Zumwalt here.
I leave any questions of accuracy to our USN experts, but it certainly seems closer than the older drawings which, as Miklania says, were based on artist's impressions.

Erik, you really need a new place to look for photos. I would suggest that you try the National Museum of the US Navy on Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/127906254@N06/.

You'll find Zumwalt-class photos under albums on page 3. They have about 39 photos.

There are probably enough photos there to help almost everybody on this board.
