In 1881 Greece had 2 Rendel gunboats built at the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company for the shallow waters of the Ambracian Gulf. They received the names Hydra & Psara (Island naval forces during the Independence war of 1821). Later on 1889, they were renamed as Amvrakia & Action and the former names were given to the new Ironclad Battleships of the Navy. Received a minor modernization which changed their look on 1910. They saw action in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and Balkan Wars, served the Piraeus and Keratsini net barrage during World War I and were scrapped after World War I.

Nice work! I am stunned by the size of the main gun and
mount on such a small warship.

Sweet, Rendel gunboats definitely needed more attention in SB.

Also the bow shading makes it seem like the bow is thick and fat, is it just me?

Thanks a lot!

Rendel gunboats were unique designs and more than a hundred were built for various navies!
The funny thing is that in order to aim the main gun you have to turn your ship....which is awkward
...not useful...and backwards...in a turret era.
So, I suppose that these ships were mostly for shore bombardment.

I made a What if scenario....if the boats were converted to Minelayers during 20s-30s...and not scraped.
Reconstruction, re-engined, a new armament of 1 DP 88mm, 2x 20mm A/A and 56 Sea Mines load.
