But in some of the drawings on the first page, aren't the gun barrels a tad too long for the time?

Nope;) Lessons n:o 1 regarding early French naval guns, the central pivot turrets with 40 and 45 caliber length makes them look long because they are long compared to the contemporary foreign designs with their 30 and 35 caliber lenghts.
