One of the most interesting ideas that were conceived by DNC stuff at Bath.

Yes! Green Mace, despite basicly a technical failure, has yet some bit of "whatifish" appeal of truely remarkable solution to post wwii naval proplems. All those ships intended to carry it have been jewels of the neverwhere world, and no suprise they also make good SB art as well.

A most excellent drawing of a fascinating idea.

What are the little blue domes at the top of the forward tower-mast? They cannot possibly be so magnificent-absurd as AA lookout bubbles, can they?

I think these are exactly that. The RN in the early 1950's considered the protection of AA lookout to be of prime importance, as lesson learned from WW2. As a matter of fact the Type 15 frigate conversions also had the enclosed AA lookout bubbles.

I wondered what they were too, I note Daring has two, as did the later Type 15 conversions.

Looking at the few plans drawn by artists since, and the only MOD painting of the Study 2 design I was forced to conclude that indeed all of those domes are in fact AA look-out positions. Six on the mast and two on the superstructure. Seems excessive and I'm guessing had the ships been built many of them would have been removed. Also I figure they might have been used for gun ranging. The Type 972 radar was a proposed splash-spotting radar so its possible there was some kind of visual back-up system. I'm guessing the RN felt that the planned 60rpg would need some seriously accurate fire-control. Probably for short bursts of accurate salvoes.
