Mind you, the Lexis didn't have a conventional turbine machinery. They had an exceptionally strong turbo-electric system, where four electric motors drove the shafts. Unless damaged by the intake of water or neglect, I don't see a reason to reboilering them, or even re-engine them. However, by the late 1920s, early 1930 at the latest, the BUEng C&R would have realized that seven funnels are, at least four too many. BuOrd would've wholeheartedly seconded that opinion. So, some sort of trunking, without disturbing the machinery layout or even replacement of the machinery units would have taken place.
