Today while I was perusing through Norman friedman's U.S. Battleships: An Illustrated Design History I stumbled upon a design study form 1919 by burOrd (pp. 179) and drew this fron their sketch:

it's armed with 4/2-18"/45s, 6/3 6", 9-5"/25s

I approximate it's length at 807 ft OAL.

Here is my Rendition of thier sketch

I think I might play "What if".

It was. It was basically an 18" version of South Dakota. The actual sketch was drawn mainly to show how switching to turreted secondaries would impact the design so there's no details on the design.

Good work!

Very interesting, indeed. Looking very modern for a 1919 design.

All the small battleships design from 1918-1920 had turreted twin, or triple 5 inch guns. Strange that this battleship is not in #1 Springstyles book.

I Agree with all of the above. The sketch by BuOrd was only to show the arangement of the triple 6"/53s and their advantage over the casemate mounts. No dimentions were ever determined, and obviously the proposal never when forward.

I think I'd still like to play "what if" with the design and flesh it out staying cautiously within the time period and technical development of the era.

Here is the sketch including the dorsal view as it appeared in Freidman a la shipbucket:

The forward superstructure is taken from tthe proposed USS South Dakota since the sketch and drawing are so much alike in those regards--Heuhen was correct to point out the simmilarities . . .they are there.
