Nice work.

Reminds me of something I saw on the web years ago on Alt Naval's now vanished site, he had a flash game where you could move the parts to design your own ship. I'm sure the base design was one of these BC studies.

In 1926 the Chief of Staff of the French Navy, ordered a study for a 17,500-ton battlecruiser design from the Service Technique des Constructions Navales, whose general characteristics were a length of 672.5 ft, and a beam of 80.5 ft. Her armament was eight 305mm guns all positioned forward a la the British Nelson-class, augmented by six 90mm and ten 37.5mm guns . Her speed was calculated at 34 to 35 knot, fast enough to hunt down, and kill other cruisers and engage convoys defended by slower and older Italian battleships. Her 305mm guns were not strong enough, nor was her armor resistant enough to counter these battleships directly. The design was rejected.

This design along with the next drawing to come (1929-24,690 ton battlecruiser design) are important precursors to the eventual Dunkerque design.

Nice work David, it certainly looks like a cruiser killer.

Interesting that this design was commissioned before the Deutschland class...

"fast enough to hunt down, and kill other cruisers" The 'other cruisers' were the 32-33knot 10,000ton 8in gun Washington Treaty cruisers.
France had an allowance of 35,000tons to replace earlier capital ships in 1927, so could build two of these small battlecruisers then.

And as such the eventual design for battlecruisers. Nice to see the evolution of French designs.

Sorry to contradict you but, France and Italy were allowed to replace two old battleships each for a total of 70,000 tons per country. France could build four 17,500 ton battlecruisers. Each of these designs are multiples of 70,000 tons. The next design is for a 23,690 ton Battlecruiser. Stay tuned.
