S-1 was commission on the 5th of January 1896, with a top speed of 21 knots she was the fastest vessel that the Zipang Navy had at its disposal, but also was the ship that have the least amount of Endurance with a range of only 800 miles at 10 knots, as commissioned the S-1 main Armament consisted of Two German built 88 mm naval guns, and a single twin 17.7 inch torpedo launcher, she would quickly be followed by 5 more sisters, the navy was so impressed by the design that they had ordered an extra two ships then the original 4 that was intended.
[ img ]
through the first decade of the 20th century the S-1 class didn't do that much, being quickly outclassed buy newer and more powerful vessels, and spent most of their time as training ships even with the start of World War 1, the navel staff realise that the S-1 class would be very useless as a convoy escort due to the ships remarkably short-range, so for the entirety of the war the ships mainly spent their time performing routine patrols around Zipang home Waters, as well as continuing their duties training ships
[ img ]
with the end of World War 1 the age of the S-1 class became extremely apparent so starting in 1920, the ships were decommissioned, all of them except S-6 would be sent to the breakers immediately, S-6 however would go on to be used by the coast guard until 1927 when she would finally meet her fate at the hands of the cuddles torch.

as a development of the previous Nayoro class light Cruisers, the kitakami class was a class of 10 light Cruisers built from 1911 to 1920, being a development of the previous class of light Cruiser the kitakami class in terms of displacement and overall dimensions wasn't that much of Leap, however the improvements were mainly implemented in the main battery specifically the number of main battery turrets carried, one of the flaws of the previous class of light Cruiser was it's small number of main guns, this was fixed in the kitakami class by increasing the number of main guns from 3 to 7 for a total broadside of 5 guns, several other small improvements over the previous class were also made particularly the crew accommodations and general functionality, this helped to make the kitakami class a truly successful and effective design

kitakami was commissioned on the 7th of July 1911, she did remarkably well on her sea trials managing to achieve a top speed of 26.5 knots a full 1.5 knots faster than her original design speed, a another notable thing about her trials was the accuracy of her guns, even though her crew was still cadets fresh out of the naval academy. Her guns were found to be extremely accurate and precise, upon her commissioning she was placed into the first Cruiser Squadron alongside the Nayoro and toyo. with the Outbreak of the First World War, the first Cruiser Squadron was requisitioned by Royal Navy to Bolster its cruiser force in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. during the early stages of World War 1 the first Cruiser Squadron was detached to help support for the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force in capturing and destroying German wireless stations in German New Guinea and the southwest Pacific. kitakami would also take part in the final stages of the the battle between the German light Cruiser SMS Emden and the Australian light Cruiser HMAS Sydney, a as well as a fellow Squadron member KNT Nayoro. after this however the first Cruiser Squadron would spend the remainder of the war patrolling Indian and southwest Pacific Ocean
[ img ]
at the start of 1920s the for original kitakami class cruises beginning to look their age, with all four of them seeing extensive use in the First World War, they were all extremely out and in 1921, the naval committee decided that it was more cost effective to simply decommissioned ships then for them to go through a prolonged and expensive refit. In addition with the four Hozu subclass been completed, all four of the original kitakami class cruisers would be decommissioned by 1922.
[ img ]
in 1923 the Yahagi underwent a experimental refit, this refit entail the removal of all of her pedestal mounted deck guns, as well as the complete rebuilding of her superstructure. her deck guns were replaced with two experimental twin 14cm gun turrets. a very visible and drastic change was also made her forward most funnel it was was replaced with a large trunk funnel, this funnel bending back and being attached to the second most funnel, she emerged from the refit looking like a completely different ship from how she had gone in. However several issues would be noted upon her rejoining of the fleet, the biggest one of which being the two twin gun turrets, it was found that whenever the guns were fired on anything other than a broadside, they had a bad tendency to damage the superstructure with their muzzle blast, as well as shattering Windows on the bridge on several occasions. starting in 1925 the rest of the class would also go in the yards to refit, however it was decided that the twin gun turret would not be fitted to the other members of the class due to the problem it had caused the Yahagi, so instead the rest of the class would simply keep their twin pedestal mounted 14 cm gun. however the other additions such as a block superstructure and trunk Funnel did make it into their refits, with all of the ships being refitted between 1924 and 1928.
[ img ]
At The Turn of the 1930s all four of the Hozu subclass would definitely beginning to look their age, much like their long departed sisters did in the 1920s,even with the extensive refit that all four ships had undertaken, the navy began to decommission them with the first of the class Hozu been decommissioned in 1932 followed by Yahagi in 1933. However by 1934 two of the class were still in commission these being the Muko and Kumano, both of which had been reassigned in 1933 to 2nd Cruiser Squadron Station at Tajima naval base. Much like many other older ships stationed at Tajima. they would both go on to be sunk during the Japanese surprise attack upon the naval base. Muko would be sunk by two torpedoes delivered from to Japanese torpedo bombers, she would quickly take a huge amount of water and wood capsizes in the shallow water of the Harbour. Kumano would manage to get underway but would be hit by 2 High explosive bombs from Japanese dive bombers, one of these causing a massive explosion, this explosion being from her rear most magazine, she would quickly lose control and founder in the shallow Waters of the harbour much like her fallen sister, under the Japanese occupation both wrecks would be raised in 1938 and subsequently scrapped.

with the rapid pace of Battleship development, in the early part of the 20th century, the navel high command realised that even though they had only recently commissioned a class of 2 brand new battleships, these two ships were within a span of 2 years, the two battleships had quickly been outclassed buy newer and more powerful ships entering service, of particular concern was the Japanese acquiring several salvaged former Russian battleships increasing the Japanese battleships Force within the span of weeks. And with Japan beginning construction Katori class battleships. so the navel high command began design work on a new class of Battleship in conjunction British manufacturer Armstrong Whitworth, the final design that was chosen for a battleship of 21,166 tonnes standard displacement, with a main battery of 4 12 inch guns, a secondary battery of 12 7.5 inch guns and a tertiary battery of a further 12 155mm casement guns.

Yoshino was commissioned on the 24th of April 1907, she like many other ships built at the same time as her were immediately obsolete by the launch of HMS Dreadnought, the world's first true all big gun battleship a year earlier, originally she was meant to have two other sisters however with the radical leap that the Dreadnought was, the navel high command came to the conclusion that Japan would most likely either simply buy a modified design of the ship or produce something like it. this would ultimately be correct with the introduction of the Japanese kawachi class dreadnought, even though by the standards current navel environment she was obsolete, she would still prove herself to be an overall solid design. this would be proven when Yoshino would suffer a condition with a mid-sized passenger ship the damage to both the passenger ship and Yoshino was extensive but unlike the passenger ship which would go on to sink 5 hours later due to flooding and heavy bulkhead damage. Yoshino had her entire bowel completely crushed in, this causing massive flooding below the waterline, however her crew would manage to stop her from sinking and she would limp with the survivors picked up from the sinking passenger ship back to her homeport. in 1908 she would be followed by her sister ship the Tsurga, which unlike her sister would have a much more interesting career.
[ img ]
throughout the course of WWI both ships primarily took part in convoy escort duties due to the relatively slow speed, compared to other more modern capital ships, as such other than convoy escort duties they begrudgingly assisting Japanese forces take over several German-occupied islands in the Pacific. with the Wars end in 1918 both ships were recalled to home waters to undergo a small refit and scheduled maintenance. when both ships emerged in 1919 from this refit the main thing that was added during this refit was the addition of several more spotting platforms to the foremost tripod mast, as well as the installation of a much more advanced rangefinders for her main battery guns, however in 1922 with the signing of the Washington naval treaty both ships were scheduled to be decommissioned to comply with limitations of the Treaty, Yoshino would be used as a radio controlled target ship, before being turned into an ammunition dump in 1929 and being renamed to X23. Tsurga on the other hand would be turned into a gunnery training ship, this entailed the complete removal of all her 7.5-inch guns, with 4 out of her 6 turrets being replaced with brand new type 25 15cm triple gun turrets. as well as the removal of 4 of her casement mounted 15cm guns. Following Japanese design practice superstructure was turned into what many westerners referred to as a pagoda mast, with the installation of many spotting platforms fire control units. 9 out of her original 18 boilers were removed cut he has speed down to only 10 knots along with the addition of some lighter done purpose and anti-aircraft guns she would emerge from her extensive refit on the 29th of November 1926.
[ img ]
starting in 1929 Tsurga would be stationed at tsuno naval base with much of this time being spent floating anchor, however in 1932 with Japan's growing aggression and imperial ambitions she was along with many other older ships of II reserve Squadron sent to Tajima naval base. this was a misguided plan by the navel high command to intimidate Japan for attacking, with Tajima naval base being the closest Zipang naval base to Japan, it was feared that this would be the Japanese's first and most likely location to attack, however it was believed that if a large amount of ships were present there at any one time, any potential Japanese invasion Force our Attack Force would be intimidated into not attacking, however this would prove to be a very misguided way of thinking. on the morning of 4th of September 1934 Tsurga would be out one of her very rare training cruises, by this point her engines which is not been replaced since she was built in 1908, which meant that even though she could comfortably reach 10 knots she was unfortunately only able to make 8 and a push. at 6:40 in the morning lookouts atop her pogona mask spotted a large squadron of unidentified aircraft approaching her, the Lookout relayed this to the captain just as the aircraft flew overhead. It was quickly realised that these were Japanese aircraft, the captain quickly ordered a radio message be sent back to Tajima to warn of the oncoming Japanese air attack, unfortunately the radio have the malfunctioning since the previous day which meant that no message could be sent. the Lookouts then spotted plumes of smoke coming over the horizon, the captain quickly ordered all crew to battle stations, eventually the lookouts identified the ships as 3 Japanese heavy cruisers and 1 Japanese light Cruiser. Captain quickly ordered the main battery turrets to engage the oncoming Japanese Cruisers who by this point had opened fire upon Tsurga, as the old pre-dreadnought Japanese heavy cruisers returned inaccurate fire at each other, the new commissioned heavy cruiser Takao managed to score 2 hits with her forward most 8 inch gun turret, one of these hits penetrating Tsurga very weak deck armour around the number 2 gun turret knocking it out of action as well as causing a small fire. The light Cruiser Kitakami closing to a range of 10,560 yards in order to launch torpedo strike upon the slow-moving pre-dreadnought, however she was quickly hit 6 times consecutively by 15cm secondary guns, being forced to turn away from her torpedo attack because of this. However, as Kitakami was extending the range from Tsurga, however Tsurga would Focus have fire completely upon Kitakami, with two 12-inch hits hitting Kitakami amidships and causing a substantial explosion, effectively rendering Kitakami dead in the water. However by this point Tsurga will seriously damage and multiple fires and with a fire around number 2 turret growing in size the captain ordered all crew to abandon ship, as this was done the ready ammunition stored in her rear most 15cm gun turret exploded this interned cause the even bigger explosion which completely ripped the ship into with both halves sinking within 5 minutes of the explosion, taking 683 to their deaths.
