Post subject:  Republic of Texas 2.0
Since the untimely death of my last computer hindered further development of the Republic of Texas, I have decided to start version 2.0. It takes advantage of additional research material, statistical methodology, and improvements on my drawing practices. Some of it will be the same, some of it will change. I will arrange all of it into decades starting with 1850-59, and I will continue to cover major developments and weapons systems in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

I hope you all enjoy what is to come.

Republic of Texas, 1850-59

I. Introduction
As early as 1837, the Republic made several attempts to negotiate annexation with the United States. Opposition within the republic from the nationalist faction, along with strong abolitionist opposition within the United States, prevented Texas's admission into the Union. The Cuevas-Smith Treaty, arbitrated by the British in 1844, formally resolved the ongoing border dispute with Mexico and ended further attempts at annexation.

After Texas’ sale of the New Mexico Territory to the United States in 1845, Mexico broke diplomatic relations, claiming the sale was a violation of Cuevas-Smith. Texas re-established its Army and Navy and prepared for war. The United States, at Texas’ invitation, stationed troops across the Rio Grande from Matamoros. This provocation sparked engagements between the two. After a series of United States and Texan victories, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the two-year war.

Post-war Texas grew rapidly as migrants poured into the cotton lands of the Republic. They also brought or purchased enslaved African Americans, whose numbers tripled from 1850 to 1859, from 58,000 to 182,566.

Purchased and commissioned on 25 October 1839, Louisville was a schooner that served as a water tender until 1842. When the war started, she was refurbished and used as an unarmed dispatch vessel. After the war she was conducted surveys of Texas harbors and coastal waterways, reducing the insurance costs for importing goods by sea.

She had a crew of 58: (8 Naval Officers and 88 Sailors, 1 Marine Officer and 5 Marines)

Placed in reserve in 1854 after her replacement was commissioned, she was sold off in 1855.

Wharton and her sister ship Archer were two brigs built in Baltimore for the Texas Navy in 1839. Archer saw action with the Austin at the Battle of Campeche in 1840. Both were laid up when the Armed Forces were de-funded in 1842.

Both were returned to service in 1845 after refits at the Galveston Navy Yard and served through the war. Wharton was completed first because she was in better condition. Archer had unrepaired damage from Campeche.

Wharton was armed with fifteen 18lb medium guns and one 12lb long gun. Archer had fourteen 18lb medium guns.

Crews were identical; 140 (19 Naval Officers, 107 Sailors, 1 Marine Officer and 13 Marines)

Their replacements were authorized in 1855. Wharton was placed in reserve in 1857, and sold off the following year. Archer was placed in reserve in 1858 and sold in 1859.
