With the RNFAF's decision to purchase the Bell 412 as their new GP helicopter, it was decided to request an ASW version. Capable of carrying two Sting Ray torpedoes. With updates, it has continued to be the sole helicopter servicing the Navy.

While I finish off my patrol ships before posting, I thought I'd up my slight mod of Skyder's delightful design.

Okay. So I posted my new Rangers a little while back, and I have just not been satisfied with them. I've been trying to work them out to where I like them, but I decided to try a different tack.

I've been toying with an idea of what if the RNFN used light frigates or corvettes in place of larger ships in an attempt to save money and manpower. So this is my new-new class of mid-cold war escorts.

Designed as light ASW escorts, the Rangers were intended to operate in the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador, specifically the Grand Banks, as well as the Canadian coast and serve as light escorts to convoys in the event of war. Their main ASW system was their embarked helicopters, but they also carried two boxed Ikara missiles and a pair of torpedo launchers for direct engagements. To give them a more rounded armament, they were fitted with two quad-Sea Cats. They were short-legged and could not operate on long range operations without tanker support.

After their MLU. Main radar upgraded and the Sea Cats replaced with the Short Super Seacats. While the RNFN wanted to utilize the Sea Wolf missile after the upgrade, the standard system was found to be too heavy to use, and the lightweight systems were years away. The Ikaras were replaced with two twin Harpoon launchers, carrying two Harpoons and two Narwhal ASW missiles. These ships would serve from the 70's into the early 2000's before their replacements were completed.

The main guns, if you hadn't noticed, are a little different. I've loved Rowdy's idea on his patrol boats of using a main gun that was an adoption of the 105mm L118 artillery system. And I've blatantly stolen the idea, and will be using his designed turret as my modern version on the next-gen corvettes that I'm a few days from posting. So these are my take on a older looking system, with a boxier turret and visual guidance system. I've really liked the idea of using a standard caliber system for both the Army and Navy for my AU, and as envisioned the L118 as being the likely artillery piece for my small AU Army, a 4.1" or 105mm gun just seemed like a nice little fit for these smaller-scale escorts.

I'll leave technical-related comments to knowledgeable users, but that is a truly lovely looking little ship.

This is a neat little design.
Never been a big fan of missiles right on the qaurterdeck but there's nothing technically unfeasible about placing them there.
The idea of the 105mm L118 derived gun is a good one, possible one I'll nick for my own AU work (though the 105mm L7 is another good choice).
The weapons mix looks about right. So in summary, a very nice looking and suitable ship. I think this will influence my own choices as I'm currently sketching out a light frigate for my RN AU.

So in-keeping with my latest kick of going for a small frigate-corvette force for the RNFN, I present my new crack at the modern Freedom class light frigates.

Sharing a common hull form to their Rangers, this class was designed as another general purpose class of ship to patrol and defend the EEZ of Newfoundland, and support NATO and allied operations. Armed with an updated version of the 105mm L118-derived main gun, it continued the mixed-missile armament of Harpoon and Narwhal ASW missiles. An embarked Bell 412 ASW helicopter and two torpedo launchers rounded out the ASW armaments. For AAW, I always liked the swing-arm concept for the Sea Wolf, and thought it provided good flexibility to my design and fit better than any of the active of proposed boxed launcher concepts.

I borrowed the missile directors from Leut East's designs as they seemed to be a good fit for a more modern, updated version of the directors used on the 22's and 23's. May yet go back to the Type 911 or GWS27 depending on how I feel and the feedback.

Still tweeking the MLU upgrade version that I hope to post soon, as well as my poor abused and forgotten OPV and fleet tender concepts. I just keep getting sidetracked by these ones.

Nice frigste, but I think that the Sea Wolf should be placed behind the funnel to increase its firing arch to maximum possible.

Thanks! And yes, I knew that while I was setting it up. But because of the size of the magazine, placing it behind the funnel would mean rearranging the hangar, so I placed it forward of the funnel so that while it would reduce the firing arch to probably only 200 degrees or so, it allowed the ship to be as compact as possible.

Still tinkering though, as I'm working on the MLU version, so I may yet change the whole arrangement in a mad-hatter fashion.

Okay, this marks the definitive update to my modern corvette concept. While I did like the one posted above, I felt the lines didn't look quite right. I'll be reposting everything on the front page soon to make it appear chronologically correct and with more specific ship characteristic details.

Same overall armament. VM40 swing arm launcher for the Sea Wolf, 105mm main gun, 2 Harpoon/Narwhal launchers, 2 torpedo launchers, and I've added a pair of 30mm guns.

These are the updated version featuring the Saab Sea Giraffe radar 4a radar and a 4-cell Mk41 VLS for quad pack CAMM missiles. SeaStreak CIWS' were ordered to provide the ships better point-defence capabilities, and a pair of Centurion decoy launchers added.

And I can also finally post my three-ship class of OPVs, the Beothuk Class. Designed as multi-use vessels to provide patrol and supports ships throughout the EEZ of Newfoundland and Labrador's waters, their main purposes are fisheries-patrols, SAR, disaster assistance, and pollution mitigation.

Order in the same naval program as the light frigates, they share several design cues.

They're lightly armed with just a single 105mm main gun, and two machine guns. However they were designed to have these supplemented with additional arms if necessary. They feature a reinforced bow, allowing these ships to pass through light ice conditions. However these ships are certainly not icebreakers and do have to call upon the Ministry of Transportation's fleet of dedicated icebreakers to navigate heavier ice conditions during the winter months. They do carry a large helicopter and multi-purpose deck aft, but lack hangar facilities. They do possess the ability to refuel helicopters however, which assists tremendously in SAR operations.

Still working on my tender and light patrol vessels, but at least now I'm starting to really flesh out my fleet. May even start incorporating civilian vessels as well.

Thats a nice OPV, looks nicely balanced and quite seaworthy too.
