Dragonne class destroyer hunter

[ img ]

The Dragonne class destroyers, while not being the final catalyst for the Presdon Naval Treaty (unlike the last Salian destroyers), were instead used as the basis for the terms of the treaty. Based on the general characteristics of the Dragonne class, the limits of the treaty came into effect a few months after the vessel's launch.

Dragonne was designed as a destroyer hunter which was functionally similiar to a destroyer leader in that it housed a command crew for a flotilla. Dragonne traded no torpedo power and had the standard Salian loadout of 3xIV launchers, two per side - but without any reloads. To go with her destroyer hunter role, Dragonne featured splinter protection around her magazines and machinery, very uncommon for destroyers of the era.

Doubling as flotilla leaders, the Dragonnes lead squadrens in every theater of war during the World War. The most famous of the class was Puma, which served in the Scyllic at the outbreak of the war, battling Wesmeric forces around Lutia and the Matu Islands and sinking the destroyer Daring. Puma transferred to New Kinchester in 1345 in response to the Antaran invasion, during the campaign she sank the frigate ARS Rina and depth charged the submarine ARS V-113. Puma returned home in 1346 amid fuel shortages. Weeks before the Antaran invasion of Aemore in 1347, Puma announced and made an attempt to leave port and surrender to the Allied navy, Puma was fired on and sunk by friendly Siegmaric artillery. Tragically, her survivors were brought back to shore and found guilty of treason.

Saliam and Osora were the only Pact nations to adopt the use of directors for their autocannons, significantly boosting their effect on striking down hostile aircraft. 1345 also saw the adoption of air search radar for smaller fleet vessels such as destroyers. All of these measures were put into place due to the demonstration of Antaran and Wesmeric air power at sea.

Puma's #3 turret was landed in favor of a quad 37mm in 1345, in preparation for Antaran carrier forces that became common the same year.

Duke of Umbara class battleship

[ img ]

The Duke of Umbara (occasionally referred to as 'the Umbara class') was a series of three battleships built for the Imperial Antaran Navy. The lead vessel was commissioned in 1305. The Duke of Umbara was designed amid a rapid development and increase in capital ship size that had already been occurring for nearly 30 years. Despite being at the top of her game at the time of her commissioning, she was undergunned just three years later, and made almost obsolescent another three years later, with her successor growing by three thousand tonnes and gaining an additional twin main battery turret.

The Duke of Umbara was an incremental but by no means small upgrade to the Prince Eisen IVs, being the first Antaran capital ship to attain the range that allowed it to operate far out of territorial waters, and as far as the (at the time) Hampton Island - which was critical to the current Empress's future plans for a war with Wesmere. Umbara kept the two twin turret main battery setup, but with a significant increase in her secondary battery. Umbara utilized an unusual combination of superfiring triples, twins and single 203mm guns along with her orchestra of 76mm guns for defense against torpedo boats.

When the Great War rolled around, the class furfilled their intended role and took part in the Battle of Hampton Island, though due to the degree that they were outclassed, they played only a secondary role. Previously during the war, they covered naval invasions in and around the Veravane to which they were most effective. After the war, all members were selected for decommissioning - with St Isaac being stripped of her armament and sunk as a target ship instead.

Ships in class

Duke of Umbara - scrapped, 1324
Chancellor Price - scrapped, 1324
St Isaac - sunk as target ship, 1326

H-class submarine

[ img ]

The H-class was one of many submarine classes fielded by the Ilyanoran Navy with the sole intent of crushing the Antarans in an inevitable war. As the second largest nation of the Co-prosperity of Pan-Antara, Ilyanora provided a significant portion of the naval power to the Co-prosperity, however even into the inter-war years its industry was lacking in development which resulted in the decision to make the submarine the primary weapon of the navy. The H-class, one such submarine design, delivered improvements in the field of diving depth, underwater speed and torpedo reloads that previous designs lacked to a certain degree. The H-class, with its first members launching in mid 1336, would become the standard for large coastal submarines meant to contest the claustrophobic seaways between Ilyanora and Antara. The physical appearance was an obvious imitation of Antara's own fleet boats, but the capabilities differed. Where Antaran fleet boats were massive in order to accommodate a crew for long periods of time and carry fuel to almost cross the Scyllic in a single journey, Ilyanoran boats had a relatively short cruising range and a slimmer frame for faster than average underwater speed.

Displacement - 1000 tonnes surfaced
Speed - 17 knots surfaced, 11 knots submerged
Range - 4000nm at 10 knots
Maximum depth - 108 meters
Main battery - 2xI 76mm/50
AA - 1xI 7.7mm
Torpedoes - 6 launchers fore, 2 aft, 18 torpedoes

Ships in class

H-00 - sunk in surface action, 1344
H-01 - sunk by shore batteries, 1343
H-02 - depth charged, 1344
H-03 - mined, 1342
H-04 - sunk in surface action, 1342
H-05 - grounded, 1343
H-06 - depth charged, 1342
H-07 - sunk by aircraft, 1342
H-08 - depth charged, 1343
H-09 - surrendered, 1344, scrapped 1350
H-10 - depth charged, 1342
H-11 - rammed, 1343
H-12 - scrapped, 1350

I don remember seeing it. Nice.

One thing I'm probably missing about background infos:
Ilyanora is part of the Co-prosperity of Pan-Antara, but at the same time an ememy of Antara?

There is such an example from real life, Greece-Turkey. Both NATO members, but also enemies.

Antara is both a continent and a nation. They're part of the co-prosperity of the continent but are enemies with one of its nations. ;)

Varkov class destroyer

[ img ]

The Varkovs were a new attempt for Desnia's High Seas Fleet to create a universal fleet escort destroyer. Whereas previous oceanic destroyers were of the 'leader/gunboat type' or the 'torpedo boat type', where their roles were specific and defined, these new escort destroyers came as a result of observation of Antaran destroyer doctrine. The Varkovs utilized the new 13cm/40 B22 HA twin mount, which were heavy, power driven dual purpose mount that fired lighter shells for quicker loading, which were too modeled after Antaran mounts that were bought for testing. It was common belief that B22 mount was in fact the best dual purpose gun of the World War despite Desnia's lesser need for it than Antara.

The quicker ROF of the new guns was also expected to suppliment the fact that it carried less guns than previous destroyer gunboat types. As Varkov was meant to be a hybrid, her designers did not slack off with her torpedo armament. The Varkov class was commissioned with four launchers, two triple centerline and two twins on the sides. Due to the combination of large torpedo armament and heavy main battery, Varkov was overweight which resulted in a cancellation of many vessels, leaving the class at only 16 members out of the intended 40.

Ishidny Incident

The Ishidny Incident occurred on April 18 1356, between the Desnian research vessel Ishidny and the Antaran cruiser ARS St Azia which resulted in the former's sinking as well as a cover up of the entire event.

Background

During the 50s following the end of the World War, Antara had demonstrated its nuclear capability, becoming the first nation to make use of such weapons. Desnia, in an effort to stay relevant despite the nation's weakened state, followed suite and began nuclear development program. The Antarans caught wind of Desnia's attempts and began a campaign to stunt Desnia's research with sabotage as direct action was difficult.

As both nations sourced their Uranium from the same location - the Tamar Islands controlled by Greater Bihli - Antara observed Desnian sea traffic to the islands and determined the identity of Ishidny as a research vessel apparently critical to Desnia's research efforts. Further espionage seemingly confirmed this as Uranium samples were ferried directly through Ishidny as well as its compliment of researchers.

[ img ]
Schrodinger was one of the vessels involved in the attack.

Sinking of Ishidny

Antaran spies monitored when Ishidny would be leaving the Tamars and coordinated with the Antaran Navy to strike at the perfect time, which was deemed to be at night shortly before a tropical storm which create grounds for a reasonable excuse as to cover up Ishidny's sinking.

Due to the sea traffic that occurred in the region, it was assumed the Antarans would go unnoticed on radar and the night time conditions would hide their silhouette. The forces itself assigned to sink the Ishidny was Taskforce 182 - which consisted of the light cruiser St Azia and escorting destroyers: Erin, Schrodinger and Heidemann. The excessively powerful force was necessary to ensure that Ishidny was destroyed efficiently.

Taskforce 182 departed from Sencadia naval base at 14:00 on April 15 under the guise of combat training and lingered in the Freyatic until they were given the go ahead on the 18th. TF-182 spotted Ishidny on surface search at 00:30 at a range of 71 kilometers. TF-182 approached to a range of 25 kilometers, St Azia opened fire with her main battery for a minute, where Ishidny was assumed sunk. Destroyer Schrodinger approached Ishidny's last known position and determined that no Desnians had survived the shelling. TF-182 retired the following afternoon.

Cover up and leaking

Ishidny's sinking made international news and a few accusations were levied at the Antarans for deliberately sinking the vessel, however they died down within days as it could not be proved and the Desnians wouldn't give attention to the fact that their nuclear program existed in the first place. The cyclone that was present on the 18th was stated to be the cause of her disappearance.

On 26 October 1378, the classified documents tied to the incident were leaked. This was one the events that lead up to the Nuclear War.

Erin class destroyer leader

[ img ]

While also being the first destroyer designed after the World War, Erin Coleman was the second vessel to inherit her name, with her 11 battle-star WW predecessor being retired as a museum. Erin was designed to be an AA powerhouse, sporting five DP 127mm/52 guns in two twins and one single, coupled with 76mm/50 rapidfire anti-aircraft guns. Her unusually heavy main battery for her era was down to mechanical issues with the new mounts that required their rate of fire be artificially lowered to prevent jams. The Mk58 mount would fix this issue, with the second group of ships (Langley and Black) using the newer gun and bringing the ROF of 30 rounds to the intended 45 rounds per minute. This removed the necessity of having five guns, and dropped them to four.

Erin kept a torpedo armament, but it was halved compared to her older WW cousins. Erin's speed was also slower than older ships, but she still managed an average speed of 33 knots, the rated speed of fleet carriers. Whilst being a destroyer leader, Erin was focused almost entirely around the escort role, her robust ASW and anti-aircraft suite to show for it. Further refits into the Atomic Era would further solidify her role with the addition of MkU2 anti-submarine rocket launchers and MkS series guided missile launchers, primarily for air defense. Erin officially became a guided missile destroyer in 1368.

By the time of the Nuclear War of 1378, the Erins were nearing the end of their service lives, however they continued to be modernized due to need and world tensions. Black and Kiana were stationed off Antaran occupied Siegmaria during the heavy riots that preceded the start of the war. Both vessels warded off FACs from Union forces before the war was officially declared. Despite being on high alert, Kiana was struck by air launched anti-ship missiles and sunk, being the first vessel lost in the war. Short as the war was, Black returned home for the 2nd Antaran Civil War that came as a result of the nuclear exchange between Desnia and Antara . The class remained active for only a year into the civil war before being decommissioned after 25 years of service.
