Leopard-class war brig

[ img ]

The Leopard class brigs-of-war represented the Antaran Navy in its infancy, as only a decade prior the navy did not exist. Sub 500 ton brigs were Antara's most numerous type of warship in the early 1100s, largely due to the nation's small industry and doctrine. Under Willamina I's reign and at the start of the War of the West, the navy was vastly outmatched by even a single Aemoric navy. The War of the West was the name given to the series of wars and conflicts from 1097-1211 (114 years) that occured around the continent.

The Leopards, as well as other brigs, were built to raid merchants, transports and overwhelm escorts with their numbers and speed. Due to Antara's miniscule amount of large warships, they rarely picked fights with other dedicated warships and ultimately the early Antara could not survive the slaughter that was the first few decades of the 1100s.

Displacement - 480 tonnes
Speed - 11 knots
Armament - 16xI 127mm guns

Ships in class

Leopard - sunk in action, 1105
Reihtworth - captured, later sunk, 119
Imbria - captured, later sunk, 1122
Avelia - grounded and abandoned, 1115

One of my friends gave me this idea.

Paris class destroyer leader, ARS Langley

[ img ]

In the late 1330s, the 6th member of the Paris class was chosen for an experimental refit based on its overall low importance to the rest of the fleet. This experiment entailed the replacement of her 127mm battery with a 152mm one. This was based on the desire of the navy to supplement its destroyer force with additional firepower to rectify the perceived disadvantage against other powers. While the navy would ultimately settle on building larger destroyers as a whole, Langley represented a possible upgrade to a destroyer leader's firepower.

Langley's twin 152mm/45 guns were taken from the casemates of battleship Emperor Franklin and placed in a specially designed enclosed but unarmored powered mount based on the existing twin 127mm. The new mount lost its DP capability from the original as a result. To save on weight, Langley used just two of the mounts, down from three twins. There was concern with the lack of long range AA capability, however it was argued that older standard destroyers would continue to use single 127s due to their smaller size, thus it was not a big loss.

Ultimately the mount was not adopted into widespread use as the need for dual purpose artillery in the coming war superseded the desire for surface artillery.

Two very nice additions, the Leopard looks very good and sailing ships in AUs are quite rare!

Kuzuryū-class standard carrier

While the Imperial Osoran Navy had been pioneering the role of the carrier in the fleet, the Kuzuryūs solidified their place as the main striking force of a battle group after the Osora-Hang War - where they demostrated their terrifying potential. Although Osora had first used carriers in battle years earlier when they annexed Zhangzhou, battle experience allowed them to refine both their doctrine and actual carrier design, leading the world until well into the World War.

Type 1340 class destroyer

[ img ]

The Type 1340s were last class of destroyers to still be built under treaty limitations by the Siegs prior to the start of the World War, and the only nation to have actually kept to the displacement limits throughout, owing to the honorary nature of the country's culture. When looking at contempory destroyers of the late 30s, the Type 1340s were very modest at 1500 tonnes and only five guns (two twins and one single), and a speed of 36 knots. Despite not being destroyer leaders (as the Siegs did not have such a designation) all vessels of the class could accomadate a flotilla command group if needed owing to the increased space provided by using twin gun mounts instead if singles.

The destroyer depicted, Z128, received the Siegsmarine Crossed Halbard award for her service in war, approximately equivalent to 13-14 Antaran Battle Stars. Sieg warships rarily received awards themselves, rather individual crew members such as the captains, however in this 128's case her service record was worthy of recognition. Z128 never traded any shots with the enemy throughout the entirety of the war, but was present from start to finish, carried out 52 sorties, rescued 194 sailors in two battles, performed a close naval bombardment at New Blackwick in 1342, hunted a submarine for 7 hours whilst protecting a convoy of troop ships (however failed to actually release depth charges and merely scared the vessel away). Her final sortie was in 1347, by then the Siegsmarine had been blockaded in their ports and Z128's crew were intent on fighting but were ultimately commanded to surrender.

Z128's surrendering was seen as highly dishonorable and traitorous, thus the Crossed Halbard was only awarded to the vessel and crew after Siegmaria's government had been replaced by the Antarans. Z128 received the award six years after she was seized, decommisioned and scrapped by the occupying Antarans.

Displacement - 1500 tonnes standard
Speed - 36 knots
Range - 6000 nm at 14 knots

I managed to forget posting this.

I've redone the wartime refits of the Empress Victoria class battleships. Original post has been updated as well.

Arcadia class battlecruiser

[ img ]

Arcadia, the first battlecruiser class of her navy, would make up the scout wing of the battlefleet and heavy fire support of cruiser squadrons. The class would carry the same main battery broadside of the latest battleships, whilst sacrificing armor protection for a 25% speed advantage of said battleships. This doctrinal requirement allowed battlecruisers to fight at the same range as current battleships whilst being able to choose her engagements and provide a decisive advantage against opposing cruiser squadrons.

Arcadia and Umbara were a result of the Aemore Defense Sphere Directive of 1300, which sought to provide Antara with a ocean-going fleet capable of challenging the naval powers of Aemore. This directive saw the rapid expansion of Antaran naval power for 15 years until the start of the Great War, and the first time in nearly 100 years the Aemorens had been worried by Antara.

Both vessels made up the 1st Battlecruiser Division. The division assisted in the naval invasions that made up most of the conflicts in the Veravane Islands in the Great War. In 1319, the division participated in the Battle of Hampton, where Umbara was disabled by gunfire from Vice Admiral Charles Cunningham's 3rd Battleship Squadron. 13" fire was presumed to have ignited the ammunition stored in the 152mm magazines of Umbara, destroying her boilers, setting her ablaze and causing her to drift for 40 minutes before fires reached her aft magazines causing a detonation that cut the vessel in half. Umbara was the largest loss of life on the Antaran side of the battle.

Some time after the war, Arcadia was decommissioned as she had become obsolete. There was considerable discussion as to what would be done with the vessel. Some wanted to convert her into a carrier, however the navy was not entirely decided on the usefulness of such a warship. Arcadia was ultimately sold for scrap in 1328.

Numara class escort cruiser

[ img ]

Built during the final years of the Great War, the Numaras were a series of old escort type cruisers by the time of the World War. Above average displacement (5300 tonnes standard) for a late Great War light cruiser, the Numaras were built for range and bursts of fast speed, being able to sustain a combat speed of 35 knots which was lightning fast even 20 years later. As built, the class boasted a modest armament of eight single 152/45s, with 5 facing the broadside. Initially she mounted four fixed 530mm torpedo tubes on each side, however by 1326 they had been replaced with four twin 610mm rotating launchers. Her armor protection as built was equally as modest, with a single strip of 65mm belt covering her magazines and engines.

The Numaras followed a similiar trend in doctrine to the Siegs, and completely different from their rival Antarans. The Osorans, not effected by treaties, saw little need for large light cruisers, like the Antarans who used their full allotted displacement for such cruisers. Numara in particular operated as a high speed and long range scout, a destroyer leader, a submarine command ship and an active minelayer. Given Osora's less effecient shipbuilding industry, rather than retire the Numaras in the late 30s, they were instead rebuilt and modernised.

In 1337, the three Numara's had their boilers and engines replaced. While there was little notable difference in speed, the more modern engines lightened her displacement, which also gave her room for a replacement of her main battery. The single pedastal mounts were removed and replaced with lightly armoured (only splinter protection) twin barbette mounts, two aft and one forward. Her armor belts were also completely removed and replaced with shorter 76mm plates that covered the magazines, and thinner 50mm plates that covered the boilers and turbines. The rebuilds were said to be as expensive as constructing a newer vessel, but were finished in a shorter time (5 months of rebuilding).

As a pivotal part of the fleet, the Numaras were very active throughout the World War and functioned primarily as destroyer flotilla leaders rather than their afformentioned roles, which were better left to newer ships. All vessels were sunk by 1348, Nayori being the last.

As depicted, Kagi was painted in Nakashima Special Type camouflage, for operation in the confined island waters of the home islands. Kagi was purposely grounded after sustaining naval gunfire, where she became a fortress and had to be cleared out by Antaran marines during the invasion of mainland Osora.
