Solace-class destroyer Osora's and Antara's effective demonstration of submarine warfare during the World War inspired many now smaller navies around the world to invest in their own submersible fleet. Progress was initially slow in the 50s and early 60s due to many former powers still recovering from the destruction of the war, as well as the advent of the guided missile temporarily drawing attention away from submarines in the 60s. The Haishing Conflict showed that Antara still ruled the surface and that a fleet capable of winning a missile trade-off would be too expensive for most navies. In the late 60s, submarines began to roll off Salian, Wesmere, Qing and Desnian slipways at an alarming rate. This shocked the Antarans, who would respond swiftly with ASW conversions of many of their existing destroyers, as well as the design and construction of new vessels focused mainly on defending the fleet from submarine attacks, such as the Solace class destroyers. As the Syce and Shannon class ships were nearing the end of their life cycles quicker due to poor maintainence, most were getting scrapped or sold in the 70s. As such, the Solace and succeeding destroyers needed to be built in numbers to replace the older vessels. Constrained by budget from a still recovering economy, the Solace class did not receive as many members as was promised to the navy. The Solaces were caught up in political trouble due to their size and cost. By then, destroyers had grown to the size of small light cruisers, and were underarmed for their cost. The final Solace design ended up being heavy and overarmed for its size. This thinking would continue to influence the way the navy ordered its fleet, preferring to keep destroyer designs small, but build them in larger numbers. What were thought of as light cruisers (really actually large destroyers) were ordered in smaller quantities. Additional cost saving measures were also implemented into the final design, mostly notably its artillery armament using older gun mounts taken from a surplus originally reserved from retiring Shannon/Syce class ships. While there was some degree of modernisation with fire control, they were manually loaded like they were back in the World War. While the Navy would initially only get four ships, additional vessels were requested to fulfull other roles, such as air defence and 'general-purpose' combining both ASW and AAW on a single hull. These would make up Solace's subclasses, and would be ordered throughout the 70s, albeit slower than navy's older vessels could be scrapped. Budget would increase in the lead up to the Nuclear War, allowing batches after the 1st to utilize the equipment the navy originally wanted. Hello Shigure! I really like your Solace class destroyers. I think that their sonar is suitable for my frigates as well. Does it has a rubber cover like Knox frigates? I will use the basic schematics of the sonar, but shade in red without the rubber. |

Another redraw. Arabella class destroyer Arabella was based on an enlarged Oscar-class hull, utilizing the additional space for another main battery mount and additional fuel, allowing for longer voyages. Arabella had a single funnel setup as opposed to two, for weight saving purposes. This created a problem as it only took a single hit to disable the ship's propulsion. This boiler and stack setup would continue for several more years, until the navy was convinced that the flaws outweighed the benefits. The class had one of the highest loss ratios of any warship class in the navy, with six out of eight being lost in combat during the World War. MORENO survived the war with 9 battle stars, with VERA earning 4. Both remaining vessels were decommissioned and either sent to the breaker or sunk as a target ship due to their obsolescence. Ackerman-class destroyer Developed concurrently with the Solace class, Ackerman utilized the same base hull but with COGAG propulsion. Initially, only two vessels were ordered in order to test and correct any complications. Ackerman and Mallister started construction in 1374, and were commissioned in 1376. Both vessels suffered teething issues during construction, and again after launch, however they were solved before another nine vessels were ordered in 1377. The last vessel in the class was commissioned in 1382. Unlike Solace, Ackerman was a single coherent batch of general purpose ships. She made use of the new MM3 launcher capable of launching 52 anti-surface, anti-air or ASW missiles. Specifications Tonnage - 3000 tonnes standard Speed - 30 knots Armament - 130mm/52, MM3 single arm missile launcher, 2xIII 324mm torpedo launcher, x2 20mm CIWS Ships in Class Ackerman - sold to Leovarra, 1310 Mallister - scrapped, 1412 Davenport - scrapped, 1412 Lukara - scuttled, 1379 Bellemont - sold to Etressia, 1309 Stoden - sunk as target ship, 1310 Jessalyn - burnt down, scrapped, 1385 Dunford - scrapped, 1413 Peerson - scrapped, 1413 Adelbert - sold to Leovarra, 1310 Zukerman - sold to Etressia, 1309 |

Reyna-class heavy frigate The Reyna class was originally conceived months before the World War, during rising world tensions, as a potential requirement for a large amount of cheaply built destroyers to make up the severe numerical disadvantage to Antara's rival fleets. They were one of the design proposals for the Shannon-class destroyers, fitting the quantity-over-quality specification before it the reverse was agreed upon. Under this specification, the class would displace nearly half of the final design, be about 5 knots slower and carry half as much artillery. Months after the war began, the Shannon class ships were still in the finalizing phase and the navy was still in desperate need of ships. The 1342 War Emergency Destroyer Plan was drawn up, and the quantity-over-quality Shannons were brought up once again as a potential solution. Another specification came in in early 1343, stating that the new ships would need to be capable of escorting light carriers, which meant in excess of 32 knots of speed. The q-o-q design already fulfilled this specification, but more work was needed to be done in order to bring the cost down and decrease construction time of the class in order to bring them into the war faster. At this point, working names of Fast Escort and War Emergency Destroyer were being used. In order to save on cost and construction time, the class would be utilizing pre-existing armaments and systems, and even modified hulls if needed. This was seen in a downgrade of quality and many within the navy did not want them to be confused with and lumped in to the frontline destroyer role. By the time the first vessels were under construction, they were designated as frigates. The speed difference between these vessels and their slower brethren often led to confusion during fleet organization, they were thus known colloquially as 'fast frigates' and 'light destroyers'. Colette-class heavy frigate The Colettes were a continuation of the 1342 War Emergency Destroyer plan, based on the same hull as the Reynas. Colette utilized a pair of dual main battery guns and a single mount that was tacked on late in development. As war mobilization had ramped up significantly in 1345, there was a great new surplus of equipment and manpower, and as such - corners did not need to be cut. The navy still had a need for light carrier escorts with enough range and speed to keep up, and an extension of orders was created in mid 1344. The class had become somewhat overgrown, but not enough to have a noticeable negative effect on her performance. An original order of 34 vessels were made, however it was cancelled after 13 ships had already been launched. By then, the navy was instead looking into building more first-line destroyers instead of fast escorts. Do you know the meaning of the world "Antara" in Greek? 1. the darkening of the atmosphere by clouds of fog that portends a terrible storm and by extension terrible bad weather or strong wind. 2. the obscuration from the smoke, noise and clamor of the battlefield. BTW, I love the Ackerman-class destroyer. |
