Probably. Soviets liked to think big. Unfortunately, when you think too big military wise, your coffers run dry...

Hmm, interesting. At first I thought, Oh No Erik has caught "Kirovitis" (the disease that forces you to take a Kirov lengthen it to 800m and then add 20in guns, 400 Granits and sixty 3-D radars, ususally AEGIS for no other reason that 'it looks cool') but no this is actually something you can look at and say, hmmm it has some smart ideas and looks reasonable sane (ok, Kirov to me does not look totally sane). A worthy counterpart to your alt-1980s USN warships.
I surely have caught Kirovitis (as have you, be honest) but I don't post that dreck online :P

Soviets didn't "like to think big" nor deliberatly make bad ass big ships. In case of pr.1144, they just had too many requirments to go along with surface ship that was to carry large number of really large size SSMs, and those dictated the size of the desing.

That's true. I'm reading an academic book about the Soviet Navy in the Pacific (its a bit out of date :D ) trying to get more info for the Rhodesian-Soviet naval confrontation in my AU and it has a bit about the Kirov and quoting the various Soviet Admirals talking about it. Apparantly they were very proud of its multi layered air defense missiles which they thought meant a US Navy carrier air group couldn't sink it. They built a ship big enough to carry the SSMs (Gollevainen) and the air defense complex so they could go to sea and take on the US Navy carriers. It probably wouldn't have worked but at least they were trying.

Turrethead's rather unrelated work split to here. I'm kind of proud of this work in a technical (vs lunatic political) sense and would like to keep things fairly on-topic.

Somehow people aren't getting this. Raven's work split here.

Post your own stinking work in your own stinking thread, please.

Very impressive. So, Kirovmania is now replacing Alaskamania.

It is still a malaise of "the bigger the better"

Wonder what's next, Yamatomania? Or maybe Iowamania? (Not that there's a shortage of actual official Iowamania)

It's got to be something nice and easily bashable, so I'd figure Iowackiness (once paul? finishes his) is the next likely candidate.
