Hey all,

A few minor revisions to the challenge submission, mostly driven by Okieboat renderings. Not much to say, and I'm about off to NYE festivities, but I'd be happy to explain/discuss any detail changes if folks are interested.

Changes primarily to:
  • ESM atop the mainmast is rearranged (it looks cramped in the side view, but I mocked it up and it all fits)
  • Mast bracing is more logical
  • Moved TACAN
  • 26' boat handling modified
  • Comms modified
  • Firefighting equipment modified
  • Ventilation improved
  • Forward Mk 10 is now the correct angled-load version, and the aft one is the correct horizontal-load version
  • Blast shielding of the aft Mk 13s is much more extensive
  • Faraday-caged lookout stations added
  • Liferaft disposition improved
  • Slightly adjusted the midships superstructure based on Long Beach core refueling study
  • Masker added
  • GMFCS domes are resized based on Sea Phoenix study
  • EDIT: New SPS-10

I think it looks even better than before, looks like 99% perfection to me.

Sorry Erik, still needs the new SPS-10

And a doomcone :D

Also still wondering what Ace's flush-deck Long Beach derivative would have looked like. His preview was actually quite graceful, with only the launchers and the preliminary tower structure in place.

LOL, "final" is never final. I like the new SPS-10! What do you mean, "doomcone"?

I'd also like to see the flush-deck derivative, but I'm a little skeptical it would have made it through detailed design. Warships had become volume-critical by that era but naval architects hadn't totally internalized that knowledge. You've got bulky missiles and temperamental electronics which require specialists (i.e., not just draftees) to maintain them -- where are you going to put everything?

Thanks.

The 8"/55 caliber Mark 71, on the discord server it's nickname is The Doomcone.

True, but that's what we have two whole forum sections for :D

Oh, ha. Well, it's definitely a little early for 8"/55 (and I see no reason she would have been built with a sufficiently strong foundation, but you can always refit stuff with money and tonnage).

Updated with the new SPS-10.

Err... I'd use the B version, by the time TyBeach launches the entire fleet should have been updated to that standard.

And no, she's a bit early for the Doomcone. If anything, in order to save weight, I'd see her going to the 5"/54 Mk 45

I don't totally understand what's going on with the additional details on the SPS-10B drawing. I went with what looks like the real (or "real") thing:

That's the A version. The B version has a modified reflector: A triangular section was added to the underside, and the feed horn was modified (invisible at our scale) to reduce sidelobes and radar interference between similar sets working close together.
