Have updated mine.

change log:
- moved around and made new places for life-rafts. done as simple as possible... it's a military vessel after all!
- changed and mover the mk-48 to a mk-41 VLS. if you can carry it.... why not, and it's a common equipment in the Navy
- changed 56mm with a 30mm
- removed some of the landing boats.
- added some aircraft.
- some minor changes.
- still one or two drawing error here and there. But it's an old drawing that I just refurbished for this.
- I could gone for a modern radar, but I went for a radar, that is taken from a loder vessel and overhauled/upgraded, whatever you want to call it... it's not a first line vessel after all!!

Not perfect, but good enough

Project 1808.1 Volga

With the creation of the Soviet carrier fleet in the early 1970s with the adoption of the Project 1143 'Kuril' class, the Soviet Navy began to look at a cheaper training platform for V/STOL fighter pilots. Having approved plans for a large replenishment ship the first hull was halted and converted into a mini carrier with a hangar, offset deck but retaining its modest self-defence armament. During construction the idea of a ski-jump to enable rolling take-offs had become established and following shore-based trials the offset flight deck was rebuilt with a ski-jump before commissioning. In wartime she would serve as an additional anti-submarine carrier. The Volga was commissioned on 24 July 1978 and would serve with the Black Sea Fleet until its retirement in May 1996.

Having recently drawn two AU V/STOL carriers (my Kuril and Escort Cruiser designs) I thought this would be easy but it proved to be a tough challenge, I started and rejected no less than three projects before settling on this one. About 13 years ago I drew a nuclear-powered Soviet replenishment ship, one variant of which was an aviation training ship. This is a highly updated version of that idea. Rest assured the other projects will appear in SB too.
On recolouring the Yak-38 I found it was mis-scaled so I drew a new one from scratch and added a Yak-38U too.

Please note: drawing plan views of these ships is not a requirement for the challenge (or even for SB drawing in general). If the artist chooses to show a plan view, that's an added bonus -- but please stop pestering each contestant for plan views. Thanks in advance.

Worcester Class
-1948/1953-1984 CL81 Fokke (Named after Bernard Fokke/Flying Dutchman)
-1948/1953-1986 CL82 Eschels (Named after Jens Jacob Eschels a nautical captain that is the author of the oldest known captain's autobiography in German)

The Americans loaned both Worcester class ships to the Royal Fryssian Navy per 1948 (commisioning date).
There was more need for cruisers in the European Theatre during the cold war and Fryssia lacked modern ships after WW2.
They also loaned 2x Clevelands during the same period.
Around the 1950-1953 period the Fryssians started talking about "buying"the vessels and fully incorporate them into their navy.
Around this same time period the Fryssians started to complete their own two cruisers (Hulls from ww2 albeit not completed till after ww2)
The USNavy accepted this (The ships where strangers compared to other classes anyway).

After a long service time of around 15 years, the navy was seeking for a modification on their cruisers. The Clevelands joined the Providence Command/AAW rebuild in the USA.
The Worcesters where selected to become Multipurpose Aviation Cruisers. Seeking more ASW/Amphibious support (LPH styled) and AAW.
Their mission would change their loadout in the hangar.

The rebuilds however where doomed to be more costly than envisioned, making the ships prone to maximum usage. This resulted in the ships ending up as training cruiser till the 1980s.
Also as a result to their rebuild cost, the Fryssian build cruisers never saw a full rebuild as envisioned to double ended AAW cruisers.

Their rebuilds where set to remove 5 of the dual 6 inches and all of the 3inches on both ships.
The addition of a large hangar on the aft of the ship in place of D/E/F turrets.
The addition of storage for vehicles in her aft ex seaplane hangar, making this the hangar for the tow vehicles and spare parts storage for the carried aircraft/helicopters.
The addition of a Terrier missile system in A/B location.
New radar and esm suite and the modernisation of the command centre.
New Communication systems.
Addition of refueling capability and addition of aviation fuel stores.
Enlargement of the conning tower and modernising upper bridge deck with a flat solid roof.
Addition of an extra Radiocentre location aft of conning tower.
Creation of an aft bridge for aviation operations.
New lifeboats and safety measures for the crew.
Highering of the bow to break waves for the Terrier installation.



Before Rebuild:
6x Dual 6-in/47 Mk16 DP
11x Dual 3-in/50 Mk33
2x Single 3-in/50 Mk34

After Rebuild:
1x Dual Terrier Mk10 GMLS Mod 5 (40 missiles)
1x Dual 6-in/47 Mk16 DP
4x Dual 40mm Oto Melara Dardo
6x Dual 20mm Bofors

A mix of:
AAW/ASuW:
3x Fisker Aerospace AV-30 Waverider VTOL Fighter/bombers
3x Seakings
/or
Amphibious support:
4x Hueys
4x Huey Cobras

TTH/ASW:
3x Seaking
3x seasprite

During their lifetime as Aviation cruisers they both started to carry VTOL aircraft when they arrived in the navies inventory.
The Fryssian navy has the Ex HMS Centaur converted to a VTOL carrier in the period the Worcesters came back into service.
The first testing of the VTOL aircraft was thus also on the Worcesters and proved effective (carrying 3x Fisker Aerospace AV-30 Waverider)
They would operate during various times on both Worcesters in support of fleet when the VTOL Centaur Carrier is in maintenance.


Both ships where replaced by LPH's between 1984-1988, taking their role as Amphibious landing supporters.
Their role as AAW where taken over by DDG's/FFG's.

This monstrosity actually comes from the US Naval Postgraduate School. It's an 80,000+ ton behemoth designed to replace all current traditional large amphibs. Five are capable of transporting, wihtout any additional LHDs, LPDs, or LSDs, an entire MEF. There are three vehicle decks, above which, where one would expect the hangar to be, is a massive cargo area. Enough ISO containers and 463L pallets can be carried by the five ships to support combat operations of the MEF for several days without additional ships being brought in for resupply. Personnel are quartered in the sponsons. Different variations of the design have either two or three well decks, one optimized for LCACs, and the other for LCUs. Additional lighters can be carried on the fantail. Aircraft operations take place entirely on the flight deck level, with the superstructure being almost entirely dedicated to a hangar. The design dates from the time when people were concerned that JSF would require things like blast deflectors for operations, and accordingly, there is a jet blast deflector providing a 700 foot take-off run, and three jet exhaust collectors, which are large grids that would absorb jet blast, cool it, and direct it overboard (presumably aft). Other features include IEP, 4x Mk.29 launchers for ESSM, and extensive provisions for damage control.

Many, many artistic liberties were taken with the design, which by the admission of the authors, is not entirely refined. F-32s are shown because that's what's on the concept art.

Concept artist like to make the weirdest designs, at the same time the Navy try to reduce the size of superstructure on flattop's.

But interesting that they are trying to design a all in one vessel.... Sort of
