As promised, here is my new Gunboat:

[ img ]

As you can see it is much bigger now, maybe a bit to big. I have added another gun, 8 Harpoon missiles and ESSM for better AAW capacity. And because I needed the VLS for the ESSM any way, I have kept the Tomahawks. Also, aviation facilities have been improved so it can accomodate AH-1 Cobra´s or similar helicopters.

With the improved AAW capacity and the Harpoons, it is now possible to deploy it as a escort ship, even with the possibility of deployment of ASW Helicopters.

Comments please!

I'm no radar cross section expert, but the ship has alot of squared corners and flat sides, which I do know increases RCS. Also, there is a newer version of the OTO 127 out there, with a reduced RCS Gunshield and a longer, 62 caliber barrel. The funnel also looks vaguely WWII or Cold War vintage.

My drawing skills are not good enough yet to get a nice stealthy ship, same for the funnel. I know it all looks a bit simple, but my skills will have to improve and I am working on that. After all, it is the beginners drawings forum.

About the gun, I am still struggling with it a bit. I like the OTO 127, but I actually prefer a larger caliber, but I am still looking for a good one.

the newer OTOBreda 127/62 Compact is the same size gun, with a longer barrel and stealthier gunshield.

As far as the RCS issues go, here's the simple explaination: vertical lines and 90 degree angles like this:
____
____|_____________

Generate a large radar cross section.

angled surfaces and rounded edges generate smaller RCS, and look like this:

____
____ \_____________

Also, for the main deck, use a single-pixel wide black line, or a dark grey line where the hull and the superstructure come together.
In my personal opinion, stealthier designs are actually at least marginally easier to draw than older, non-stealth designs, because the designers of stealthier vessels go to considerable lengths to reduce ANYTHING that might add to the ship's radar cross section. Ships designed before the mid-80's usually have alot more minute details than ships designed after, and especially ships designed since the turn of the 21st century. It makes stealth ships look slightly bland, but they are, as said, slightly easier to draw.

So.... it's a billion-dollar destroyer? Am I missing something?

You, sir aren't missing anything...After further review, however...

Klaasgras, if you're gonna shell out the money for an APAR system, go ahead and spend it all the way: Buy a Smart-L set to go with it, as well as either Standard or Aster missiles and make this vessel a full on Destroyer.

The funnel is at a major incline and the bow has too much shear.
