The Americans have built some very durable ships. Take the New Orleans class, the USS New Orleans had 1/4 of her total length blown off. She still made it back. The same happened to one of her sisterships. At Samar, the USS Hoel sank after taking over 40 14, 8, 6 and 5 inch shells. The Hornet took eight torpedoes, three bombs and 400 5 inch shells to sink, both American and Japanese ammunition.
