Since this is just my second submitted drawing I posted it here instead of Real Designs. I've been working on this for a while and hope its up to standard

You're right but finding photos is tough

See photos 9-12 at

http://www.hazegray.org/navhist/canada/current/protect/

These are the only photos I could find and the same ones appear on several sites.

that explains a lot. working from pictures (even from perfect sideviews) is so much harder, and for your first real life ship I can't expect you do it right that way. first of all: remove the underwater hull, until you have better references for it. this one is entirely wrong.
second: bow is angled too much and is not curved enough.
then: use this drawing/picture/whatever it is to find the right sizes.

EDIT: and this one http://www.hazegray.org/navhist/canada/ ... aor509.gif
(yes they are small, but they are good enough to base your drawing on)
before you start detailing, post an WIP and I (or another member) will help you out. btw, never build your ship entirely on one drawing, always look at pictures and other drawings for more details or the right shapes.

Post a WIP? I take it this means work in progress. Is it as simple as adding WIP to the attachment name? Sorry I'm new here and have read all the guidelines etc and many, many threads but this process evades me.

I have also viewed just about every picture there is of Preserver on the web, so I'm fairly confident on the outfitting except for the centre RAS section. For some reason it's difficult to find close up photos of this part of the ship. It has also gone through a few refits so hull openings have appeared and disappeared over the years.

with an WIP I mean that you have to post an unfinished drawing. for the entire ship, you choose an year (most likely the year of building the ship) and work from all you have found from that configuration.

You need a really good line drawing ior good qaulity side-view photo to begin your basis. You then need as many photos as possible for the details. Artworks aren't always good for details and sometimes differ widely, even line drawings can vary in qaulity and detail by quite large amounts. But keep up the hard work, its worth it in the end. At some point everyone gets sucked into drawing real ships.

Good beginning Prairie canuck ! :D
I have beginning to draw the HMCS Protecteur (AOR 508) but as it has a long time that I don't do it, I must revise this (and my reference isn't the more good but the best that I found):
[ img ]
I think that I continue this when I have time (Maybe in Christmas holidays :) ).
Also, as Colombamike says, I am obligate to draw this with good pictures (From http://www.flickr.com/ generally)

Maybe, we can help us mutually (It's the same class)... ;)

Thanks for your comprehension and greetings.

Where do you find those photos!

Well I've got a line diagram from one of the photos but it not to Shipbucket scale. Any suggestions on how to shrink it without loosing most of the lines?
