Suddenly my efforts feel very inadequate, but I'll try to use that as a base for Pickney (this time with as-completed and post-Bushmaster versions, I'll figure out what year the latter should be after researching it) and Gravely, then work back to the older ships.

don't worry there is always a difference between new comers at shipbucket, and one of the masters of shipbucket. hey even I did draw ships weird and ugly and today for some weird reason I am called an master, I don't feel like one!!

Fret not, if you look closely at both drawings You will notice that the "bones" of both ships are the same solid ones. Sometimes just a few tweaks can make a huge, unexpected, difference, trust me.

Welcome, and yes BB1987 just having the later hull shades that you and Hood have used (amongst others) makes them look so much better.
