Hello. This is my first time here on Shipbucket, having signed up on the forums due to my love of IJN era naval vessels and the fact that I'm doing Graphics Designs in college, I thought I'd try and design my Alt Universe (Called the Free Republic of Montserrat - A large nation based on a mash-up of several large countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and England, as well as several Pacific Territories) ships as sort of a practice run.

I'm not that good at introductions but, here it goes. This is a New Year Island Class - Escort Carrier (Named for the Montserratian Civil War Battle of New Year Island) - which is basically a design inspired by the Akitsu Maru, albeit bigger, longer, and wider. The lead ship HMMS (His Majesty Montserrat's Ship) New Year Island, was built in 1932 for the Free People's Navy (Which was the navy of the Nationalist Rebels during the civil war. The Nationalists eventually overthrew the Liberal Government in July 1920.). Due to patriotism being a major cult following, (and the fact that the Free People's Navy is made up entirely of civilian volunteers- IE: the Power of the People.), the Free People's Navy paints the patriotic colors (Blue, white and red) on the exhaust funnels of their ships, and in the case with carriers, in addition to painting the funnel/s, the national flag is painted on the aircraft elevators as well. On battleships, the national flag is painted on the bow just in front of the first forward turret.

Other ships in the class include the Haul Round Island, Truant Island, East Vernon Island, and West Vernon Island.

Credit goes to @radome for the original image.

If this thread is in the wrong category, feel free to move it. I'm still not familiar with the site in whole yet.

Welcome aboard and nice to see that you try kitbashing for your AU navy.
One style rule concerns the fonts used on all drawings, which are explained on the guide rules thread, but to make it easier for you, suffice to say that you should use only Arial font, the size is 10 for the first row (Nation and ship's name), below is size 7 for the artist's name. In case of a modified drawing, the original artist should be written first, and then yours.
As a side note, try using a slightly shorter user name, at least for the drawings.

Thanks for the info. I am still quite new, so I haven't gotten used to everything yet. :)

Welcome to Shipbucket!
If you're interested in getting feedback about personal ship designs and drawing style, this is the place to start. Hope you don't mind some blunt criticism, because this is a thing that just may happen from time to time... ;)

Couple of pointers to start with:
- I'll have to second the remark above about the font. I I have no idea how you managed to get such a disjointed, except on purpose. Look around for dedicated threads or track down posts by user apdsmith, who includes a link to the official font table in his signature. Otherwise, if you're using Photoshop or GIMP, simply use Arial font in sizes 14 and 10 without anti-aliasing.
- On a related note, better use official template sheets when you post finished designs on the boards (drafts need not be based on them, but it helps). AFAIK the templates in the Templates folder are still current.
- I would like to say more about style at least, but since you just extended the original Akistu Maru without adding much original work, there isn't much to comment on your drawing so far. I will just point out that some struts below the front deck and the lower deck railing are incomplete.
- For more comments on both your drawing style and substance of your designs, you'll have to post more original drawings or concept drafts and see where it leads you.

No harm meant, of course. Show us what you can do and we can talk about it some more.
Have fun!

Must be duty calling
That's what you get for having a helpful signature. Hope that wasn't too much bother.
