Unified and declared in 1875, primarily by a renewed and expansionist Kingdom of Sweden, with assistance from the British Empire, and the newly unified German Empire, the Federation of Nordic Kingdoms would be established by Sweden after the conquest of Denmark and Norway in 1872, and the conquest of Russian Finland and Karjalan in the Second Great Northern War in 1874. Following the disaster of the Great War, in which the Federation would be a member of the Allied Powers after joining the war in 1914, a growing movement towards the 'Cult of the Marshal' would see explosive growth, and, in 1915 the King would suffer a mental breakdown, being quickly replaced by a military council until the war was over. However, following the end of the Great War and the failure of the King to recover, the 1920 the council would formally declare him unfit for duty, an act that would lead to the rise of the constitutional military dictatorship system still in power today, along with the renaming of the Northern Kingdoms into the Nordic Peoples. Deemed by many a German ally due to their intense hatred of the USSR, the world would be stunned when German forces would invade the Federation in 1941, forcing the nation into being an unwilling member of the Allied Powers, and quickly establishing a Northern Front that would mirror its counterpart of the First Great War in Denmark, which would only be broken in late 1944 with Operation Frostklinge. While losses caused during the Second Great War were severe, the defense of the nation by the then Grand Marshal Erik Olsen would cement the Marshals place as a 'Defender of the People', a title that survives to the modern day, and is bestowed on each Grand Marshal to be elected by the Council of National Defense, a military body with comparisons to the US Joint Chief of Staffs in its role outside the election process. During the Cold War, the Federation would be a noticeable neutral, not in an attempt to balance both sides, but in its outright hatred of 'Sovietism' and its verbal dislike of the 'weak, mob ruled democracies', however, by the mid 1980s relations with the west had thawed, and an secret agreement later turned public in the US 1988 presidential election, the infamous Weinberger Agreement, would be signed, making the Federation functionally a member of NATO if the Soviets began an offensive war against either party. While relations would sour in 1989, when a failed joint communist-democratic coup and later armed rebellion would be put down with extreme prejudice by the Federation Army, resulting in the brutal Union War and a series of purges, by 2004, relations had warmed to the point Federation Air Force and Army soldiers and assets were in use supporting the US in its wars with Iraq and Afghanistan, and several joint NATO-Federation military exercises, including force-on-force were being conducted. International observers have theorized on the signing of a second Weinberger Agreement in the near future, but the idea of the Federation joining NATO outright is seen as extremely unlikely.

Federation military uniforms over time, showing their evolution.
[ img ]
Various other uniforms of the modern Federation Army Forces
[ img ]
M1932 Crusader tank. Armed with a basic 47mm main gun, a coaxial machine gun, and a crew of three, this simple light tank would serve the Federation Army from 1932 until mid 1943, before it was finally withdrawn from frontline service
[ img ]
TS-1 M1940 'Paladin': The Federation Army’s equivalent to the Panzer IV, the story of the Paladin starts with a delivery of 12 Panzer 35s bought from Czechoslovakia in early 1935, during the early stages of the undeclared border war with the Soviet Union. Reverse engineered by the Federation arms industry after valuable experience, the prototype for the Paladin was ready by 1938. The prototype was expanded, with the goal of creating a ‘large cruiser tank’ and would originally carry a 47mm L/50 gun in a riveted turret. 6 of these prototypes would be tested in combat against the Soviets by soldiers from the 14th Infantry Battalion’s 3rd Company, which was shifted to be an armored company for the tests. Due to experience from these tests, the Paladin was significantly reworked, and wouldnt reach production until April 1940, with the Paladin A. The Paladin A weighed in at 22 tons, and featured 500mm wide tracks, a 180hp engine, an electric turret drive, 45mm of frontal hull and all around turret armor, and a 75mm L/22 gun. The 1941 B model would change the main gun to a 75mm L/44 gun for anti-tank use, and no other changes. However, by January 1944 this had been replaced with the D variant, which featured a new 300hp engine, increases to the frontal armor to 80mm, mounts for Ketju Posti 12mm armor skirts, and a new 75mm L/57 main gun, combined with a weight increase to 29.5 tons.
[ img ]
TS-3 Saakali tank and variants. The TS-3, also known (incorrectly) as the M1957 was a lightly armored main battle tank developed by the Federation Army and manufactured largely be Bofors and Saab. The original model was armed with a 94mm main gun, although this would quickly be replaced by a clone of the British L7 105mm by the B model in 1962. The Saakali would see long service, as it was introduced in 1957, and would be removed from active service as late as 1995, and would still be in (very limited) reserve service by 2021. Its hull is used for many variants by the Federation Army even to the modern day, including ARV and CEV variants.
[ img ]
TS-5C ‘Susi’: The Susi is a 55.2 ton main battle tank, also (incorrectly) sometimes called the M1988, layered in advanced composite armor. Armed with a 128mm L/52 main gun, a co-axial M1988 7.7mm machine gun, and in the C model, an ‘Etajar’ remote weapons station, with either a 15mm M2005 RK B autocannon or an M1997 AutoK 45mm automatic grenade launcher and is crewed by a crew of 3, TC, Gunner and Driver. The engine is a 1440hp turbine that results in a top speed of 76km/h, although the tank is equipped with a governor to prevent it from going over 50km/h. The gun is fed by a bustle rack autoloader, with a 5.7s reload and 32 rounds in the turret ready rack and 9 stored in the hull between the turret basket and the engine compartment, partially by both the engine and the turret. Newer models can fire a Airburst-HE-Frag round, and the SVO128A ATGM with a max range of 8,000m, alongside the HEAT rounds and APDS-FS rounds previous generations could fire. When prepared for combat, the Wolf is often fitted with ‘Painajainen' heavy ERA to the front of the hull and turret.

The base of Federation currency is the Krona, worth roughly 20 US cents. 10 Krona makes a Mark, which is worth roughly $2 USD. Marks are issued in ₥1 and ₥5 coins, or ₥10, ₥20, and ₥50 polymer banknotes. Krona coins come in ƙ1 and ƙ5 variants, but all are roughly the size of a nickel and are silver colored coins featuring a Federation shield bearing their value on both sides. Mark Coins are roughly the size of a 2 Euro Coin, and the ₥1 coin is a silver colored coin with copper edging, featuring a Federation shield bearing its value of 1 on one side and an image of the Nordic Court. The ₥5 coin features the opposite color wise, again featuring the Federation shield bearing its value of 5 on one side, and the image of a current or past Grand Marshal on the other. The Mark's polymer banknotes display are issued in three colors, based on value: Feldgrau for ₥10, White for ₥20, and Dark Red for ₥50. Each note features its value in each corner, along with a treasury seal within a slashed colored segment of the bill, and a Federation Shield bearing an anti-counter fitting mark opposite to the seal. By far the most used way to spend money within the Federation is the YPP, or Nordic United Bank Card. The YPP, the government controlled and run central bank, is the sole bank within the Federation outside of the Blue Zones, and issues every Federation resident a debit card upon turning the age of 15, along with an account linked to their FSN (Federal Security Number)

E-9: Command Sergeant/Command Petty Officer (CSG/COPO)
Specialists (which are the equivalent to E-4, E-6 and E-7 in terms of respect), an extremely skilled or specialized role. There might be 3 specialists on a base with an armored brigade whose entire job is tanks engines, down to what directions the bolts should be facing, and are so highly trained on them they can lick one and make it work somehow. You cannot join as a specialist. Most specialists are mechanics who went specialists, US Green-to-Gold style, in a particular part/section of a vehicle family.
SPC1: Specialist (SPC)
SPC2: Overspecialist (OSP)
SPC3: Chief Specialist (CSP)
Warrant Officers are almost entirely Pilots, and while you can join as one, the demands and requirements to do so are insane, and more often than not they are experienced personnel coming from mechanics, weapons, or other MOSs that work with the aircraft. Other MOSs Warrant Officers are part of are higher level surgeons or medics, or very rarely, as a lawyer or legal assistance.
WO1: Warrant Officer (WO1)
WO2: Chief Warrant Officer (CWO)
WO3: Master Warrant Officer (MWO)

Federation Garrison ranks. With the exception of the Enlisted (E-) these are worn as a metal pin on the front of the wearers field cap, and as a sown cloth above the wearers name on their field jacket when in garrison scenarios. For the Enlisted ranks, these are worn solely on their dress uniforms and shown on their military IDs. All rank insignias are standardized between branches, and have been since 1978.
[ img ]
Federation Field ranks. These ranks are worn as a metal pin on the front of the wearers field cap, and as a sown cloth above the wearers name on their field jacket when in training/field environments, or when in service overseas by the Officer, Warrant Officer and Specialist ranks. However, these ranks are worn even while in service within the Federation proper by the Enlisted ranks as their normal rank insignias.
[ img ]
Ranks dating back to the Second Great War. Army and Marine ranks were worn as sown cloth on the wearers left shoulder, while for the Federation Navy these ranks were worn as metal pins on ones left breast pocket. For the Officer ranks, the Army and lower Marines would use metal pins on each of the wearers collar points, while the Navy and higher ranked Marines would wear their ranks on their shirt cuffs.

Federation Army trainees and their Drill Sergeant (in working uniform)
Federation Basic Combat Training is the training that all members of the Federation military, regardless of branch, goes through, with each branch operating its own camps for its purpose, and the sole difference is that FNS training includes an extra week in Red Phase to teach trainees how to swim.
Red Phase:
Basics. Attention to detail, marching, discipline, teamwork. End with a 2 day field and first 4 man foxhole.
Week 1: Initial exercises, drill and ceremony, instructions in values and core pennants.
Week 2: Rappel tower on day 9, which required teamwork exercises to reach the top, and to rappel down, teaching and enforcing teamwork and trust. Trainees issued M1992KKT rifles, a variant of the standard M1992 Rifle permanently set up for using KKT gear, as well as a pair of M1975KKT LSWs per platoon. Day 13-14 are spent on a 5km ruck march, followed by digging 4 man foxholes and pulling guard for the night in shifts, filling in foxholes and a 6km ruck march back.

White Phase:
Combat training. Rifle, Pistol, Grenade, and Hand-to-Hand/Knife Fighting
Week 3: CLS training, tourniquets, and the first range day, with trainees being given live rifles solely for ranges.
Week 4: Rifles ranges
Week 5: Rifle ranges, and the two days of pistol range and instruction trainees receive. More will be done at AEK if needed.
Week 6: Grenade training day using 'poppers' and CQF (Close Quarters Fighting) training, both hand to hand and with special foam knives
Blue Phase:
Unit tactics and field. Skirmishes with in KKT. At least 18 days in Field. Dig 2+ platoon level foxhole circles.
Week 7: 12km ruck march followed by 7 days in the field. Soldiers are actively encouraged to skirmish with KKT rifles vs the other platoons of the company in downtime, given the objective to capture the other platoons waterproofed 'radios'. During the day, Trainees are taught squad tactics, camouflage, tracking, map reading, and are tested on map and compass reading.
Week 8: Day 1, 12km ruck march back to company. Day 3-5, 4km daily ruck march to Urban Training Village, with different companies skirmishing in Urban terrain, over control of 3 'key points'. Company of the cycle with the most captures/defends are rewarded with a relax day for Saturday, Week 8.
Week 9: Forge Preparations and training in how to use camo nets. New boots and uniforms issued if required.

Forge:
Hell Week. 48km ruck in full kit over 7 days. 700m trench crawl with overhead rounds. Last live range, mid ruck. Skirmish with others in Blue. End with a shot of Bravvin.
Day 1: 19km ruck march in full armor. Trainees dig and camouflage 4 man foxholes in platoon circles, and pull guard.
Day 2: 3km ruck march in full kit. Final range using live ammunition. Digging and camouflaging new 4 man foxholes. Trainees encouraged to skirmish
Day 3: 2km ruck march in full kit. Trainees move through an overly friendly village in squads, with villager goals being to steal their rifles, and use the KTT gear to 'kill' the trainees.
Day 4: 3km ruck march in full kit. Drill sergeants, in black protective suits, ambush trainees in hand to hand along ruck. Trainees encouraged to hit with full strength with rifles and hand at start of ruck.
Day 5: 5km ruck march in full kit. Trainees dig and camouflage 4 man foxholes in a company circle, and defend circle and 'critical equipment' (Backpack radio sized boxes with bright red markings) vs 1-3 Blue Period companies during their week 7 field time.
Day 6: Company assaults same Blue Period companies, with goal of breaking into each platoon circle and stealing same 'critical equipment'
Day 7: 16km ruck march back to company. Trainees are given a shot of brännvin at the end, then sent to bed.
Gold Phase:
Cleaning and leaving. Allowed to wear their PC. Clean and turn in everything. Graduate. Go to AEK.
Week 11: Trainees clean and turn in everything given to them during training, and are permitted to wear their PCs when outdoors. They put on their dress uniform for the first time since it was issued at reception, and have it fitted. After graduation on day 7, trainees change back into YTM uniforms and enter busses to either their AEK directly, or airport for flights to AEK.

AEK:
Specialization schooling based off a trainees SA (MOS), ranging from 14 days (Infantry) to over 6 months (Medical)

Some Federation ribbons and awards, in no real scale

And some sections of woodland entries for the M2007 camouflage contest. The central one would eventually be declared the winner, and go into use by all branches of the Federation Army Forces. However, the entry on the right would be declared the runner up, and uniforms in this pattern would be issued to the 'Novian' 4th Regiment, an opfor training unit intended to be the 'bad guys' for more realistic training.

Original flag of the Great Northern Kingdom, 1875-1916. Supposedly created by King Oscar II himself to symbolize his new, unified kingdom.

Following the collapse of the monarchy and the military temporarily taking control of the nation in 1916, this flag would be adopted temporarily. It would never fully replace the old flag of the Kingdom, even in official service, and was wildly unpopular.

Following the reorganization of the nation into the Nordic Federation and the ratifying of the Federal Founding in 1920, which would turn the Federation into a constitutional military junta, this flag would be adopted as one of the first actions of the new government. The 'Eagle flag' as it was often referred as would prove popular, and remains in barely modified use by some organizations as late as 2021

Following the hell of the Second Great War, a notable trend emerged: Federation flags would often be depicted without their eagle, often by veterans. While the origin of this modified flag is unknown, it would catch on and, bending to the popular image, the Federation would remove the Eagle and its Iron Perch from the flag in 1976, resulting in the flag that is still in use to this day.
