Walter Nowotny was a German fighter ace during World War II, with 258 aerial victories to his name. Joining the Luftwaffe shortly after the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Nowotny was initially posted with Jagdgeschwader 54 in 1940. Finding great success during operations on the Eastern Front, Nowotny rose through the air force's heirarchy, becoming the Staffelkapitän of 1./JG54 and, on 21 August 1943, Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG54. Later he would be made Geschwaderkommodore of Jagdgeschwader 101 and the commandant of a flight school in Southern France.

On 8 November 1944 while intercepting a formation of B-24 Liberators in a Me-262, one of Nowotny's engines cut out, causing him to plummet through the sky and crash 2.5 kilometers east of Hesepe. It is still unclear as to whether the incident was caused by engine failure alone or if he was shot down be a P-51D pilot. Walter Nowotny was 23.
