Three rare ones, a one-off prototype for a twin-prop M20, the Mustang with a production run of ~30, and the M20T trainer.

Dornier Do Y (Dornier Do 15)

The Dornier Do Y was Dornier's second design for a future bomber for the nascent Luftwaffe.

[ img ]

Following from the 4-engined Do P, the Do Y was a 3-engined design officially described as a "transport" to avoid the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, first flying in October 1931.
Yugoslavia was needing to upgrade their bomber fleet, and purchased 4 aircraft form Dornier for testing alongside examples of Junkers G.24 and Avia Fokker F.39. In mid-1931 the US granted a moratorium on War Debt repayments left Dornier not being paid for the construction of the aircraft from either the German government or Yugoslavia. In response Dornier embarked the first 2 aircraft on an eastern European marketing tour which resulted in no sales, but by the end of 1932 the sale to Yugoslavia was renegotiated and they were delivered to the Royal Yugoslav Air Force.
The remaining 3rd and 4th aircraft were flown to the Dornier plant in Switzerland and given Swiss registrations. While there they were significantly upgraded, including with new more powerful engines, and were delivered to Yugoslavia in 1937. These aircraft were redesignated as Do 15 by Dornier in Germany, but Yugoslavia continued referring to them using the original Do Y.

In Yugoslavia the aircraft shed their "transport" guise and were finally fitted with armaments.
Since the aircraft quickly became obsolete as bombers, they were used for reconnaissance, transport and communications, being further modified for paratrooping at the start of the War.
All four aircraft survived the Axis invasion, with 1 being transferred to the Air Force of the Independent State of Croatia.

Hawker Fury in Yugoslav service

In 1931 Yugoslavia received 3 Fury Mk.I for trials (including one with a Hispano-Suiza engine), before finally purchasing Fury Mk.II's and a construction licence in 1935.

[ img ]

Like other aircraft in the Yugoslav air force, the Fury's entered service in the delivery scheme of their home country and then adopted Yugoslav camouflage once they underwent heavy maintenance. With the Fury's though, those repainted at the Ikarus factory received a novel 2-tone camouflage rather than the standard 3-tone.
Yugoslavia's ponderous military acquisition process was inappropriate to the technological advances of the world of the 1930's, and by the time of their entry into service in 1937, the Fury was obsolete as a front-line fighter. However by the time of the Axis invasion there were still 25 operation fighters and 4 unarmed trainers, stationed near Niš guarding the Bulgarian border. Although claiming combat kills, the Fury's were outmatched and only 2 aircraft survived to be war booty with the Yugoslav surrender.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E in Yugoslav service

Yugoslavia ordered 100 Bf 109's political delays delivery commenced in October 1939, with another order placed for a further 100 aircraft.

[ img ]

In the end only 73 aircraft were delivered. The 109E were not in service for long enough to go through overhaul and repaint into Yugoslav camouflage schemes, and remained in their delivery colours, although the rudder flashes were removed as Balkan tensions increased and war became more likely.
Yugoslav pilots preferred the Hurricane over the 109, although the Messerschmitt was faster in level flight, the Hurricane was a more stable gun platform. Before the Axis invasion the 109's were deployed only in the defence of Central Serbia with only a couple of aircraft in Mostar, and were heavily committed to the initial German attacks on Belgrade. Although the Yugoslav squadron acquitted themselves well in the 109 vs 109 combats, several aircraft were brought down due to friendly fire with confusion over nationality of individual aircraft.
