This is by far the weirdest of the many 747 proposals: The 747-Trijet (or 747-300).

"During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Boeing studied the development of a shorter 747 with three engines, to compete with the smaller L-1011 TriStar and DC-10. The 747 trijet would have had more payload, range, and passenger capacity than the L-1011 and DC-10. The center engine would have been fitted in the tail with an S-duct intake similar to the L-1011's. However, engineering studies showed that a total redesign of the 747 wing would be necessary. Maintaining the same 747 handling characteristics would be important to minimize pilot retraining. Boeing decided instead to pursue a shortened four-engine 747, resulting in the 747SP." (wiki)

Wow, not only is that ugly but probably not the best idea ever to come out of Seattle. Though I can see why economically it was probably attractive to leverage as much from the 747 production line as possible.

Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander Floatplane

[ img ]

Factory demonstrator G-AVCN was used as a mockup for a proposed amphibious floatplane version of the Islander in 1975. The project never progressed further.
I'd always thought there was more potential to turn the aircraft into a flying boat, by attaching a boat hull under the fuselage and attaching wing floats, but that doesn't appear to have ever been schemed. :(

Britten-Norman Mainlander

[ img ]

Buoyed from their Trislander design, in 1972 BN scaled the concept up into a Hercules replacement; a 100-seat, Dart-engined, fixed undercarriage(!) transport. Production was to be undertaken in Belguim, but unfortunately sufficient interest was not generated and the programme was shelved.
A display model was created in British Air Ferries livery, but is illustrated here in BN demonstrator colours. Awkward looking engine cowlings are as per BN published 3-views.
