Post subject:  Real Hellenic Wings 1912-1945
Here I will present all aircraft in service with Hellenic Army Aviation and Navy Aviation of Real World. Some of these aircraft will also appear in AU Hellas. Many thanks to all members who designed aircraft which among other customers were also purchased by Hellas.

Aircraft are divided in six time periods : Balkan Wars (1912-1913) , WWI and Minor Asia Campaign (1914-1922, Mid war (1923-1939), Hellenic-Italian War (1940-1941), WW2 (1942-1945). Final section will contain all aircraft types which were flown by Hellene pilots, but with other Air Forces. History will refer to individual aircraft mostly (notable achievements, order background etc).

Each aircraft will be posted when ready. Additional sources and history is welcomed.


Balkan Wars (1912-1913)

The first warplanes used by Hellas. Officially named " Daedalus ", " Eagle ", " Vulture" and " Hawk ." The first flight was made by Dimitris Caberos on 13 May 1912 . For a short time the " Daedalus " converted successfully into a hydroplane, performed remarkable flights in June 1912. Two of these were used in reconnaissance flights during the First Balkan War in Thessaloniki and Macedonia . Later became the volatile material of the first school of Military Aviation of ' Caberos School " , established originally in Thessaloniki Lebet airport in the period 1913-1915 . Last flights were made in early 1917 . A replica of this aircraft is located at Hellenic War Museum in Athens.

Bleriot XI

Based at Sedes AB, Thessaloniki. ex Turkish aircraft captured during Balkan war. Used as reconnaissance aircraft. It is not known how many airframes captured, but Ottoman Empire had 3 Bleriot XI-2.

Maurice Farman MF.7

This aircraft has a world first. A Hellenic Farman MF.7 modified to hydroplane did the first naval mission in the world, or more correctly carried out the world's first air-naval co-operation mission during the First Balkan War, flown by Michael Moutoussis and with Aristeidis Moraitinis as observer. After the mission the MF.7 was collected by DD Velos, there is a picture shows the aircraft towed behind the destroyer. However, it seems that the Hellenic MF.7 had some modifications from the standard model, the rudder lever side-mounted instead of front, a rotary engine and front frame made from aluminum, but when I figured out return to edit. Until then, this is the "standard" MF.7 with the aluminum frame.

Another interesting historical thread.
I don't know much about early Greek aviation so this is interesting stuff.

Continuing with Balkan Wars, two more aircraft

Nieuport IVG

The 1st civilian aircraft in Hellas, (1st flying: FEB-2-1912. Pilot: Argyropoulos) . Mobilized during First Balkan War in recognision role, based at Larissa Air Base.

Astra Hydravion (or Astra Hydroplane)

This was the first hydroplane ordered by Hellenic Navy in 1912, so this is the reason she is important to Hellenic Military Aviation History. However did no see any significant action and disappears around 1914.

On the design now, my sources say that the fuel tank had the natural color of bronze, so I tried to a "bronze" color. Does anyone has to suggest (or where to find) a better bronze color?

Great thread!

Its looks like fresh copper to be honest, though bronze exists in a range of colour from almost black to a light brown.

Sounds like it was copper then, which would have probably been a better choice than bronze
