Edited the Breguet XIV in previous page.

Now, move on to next time period and the Short 184 will be also edited. Hellenic Navy used 4 airframes, with the 225hp engine (difference with the 260hp is the exhaust).

Mid War Period (1923-1940)

Part 1 (1923-1930)

This period has two parts, first (1923-1930) and second (1931-1940). In both periods significant political changes occur (First Democracy, 1924-1935, when King Constantine and Royal Family of Glyxbourg expelled from the country), the dictatorship of Theodoros Pangalos in 1925-1926 and after a unstable politically period again Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936) elected in 1928 and fell in 1932. Then again the politic system became unstable until the 4th August 1936, when Ioannis Metaxas establish his "right-wing authoritarian" rule. The Royal family of Glyxgourg had already returned since 1935. Real history of Hellas in that period is well known (if anyone has something to say for historic facts please send pm).


Returning to Air Force, the most significant date is December of 1929, when Army Aviation and Navy Aviation merged to form the Royal Hellenic Air Force. Already from 1923-1924 many obsolete types had withdrawn from service, while orders were minimal, due to the economic crisis from the Wars (Balkan War, WW1) and the Minor Asia Catastrophe.

Returning after a long time (very sorry), have something more peaceful to post.

Perhaps the only flight acheivement credited to hellenic wings is this:

On June/8/1928 the Breguet XIX «ΕΛΛΑΣ» [«hellas» = Greece] flew around the Mediterranean Sea covering 12.000 Km in 20 days, flown by 1st Lieutenant Evangelos Papadakis, Colonel Christos Adamides.

Generally the Breguet XIX were in service with Army Cooperation, with 1st & 2nd Army Cooperation Squadrons, total 30 aircframes. Used from 1925 to April 1941, passing to Royal Hellinic Air Force after its creation in December 1929. At first they carried the names of Hellenic cities or islands and were painted in Dark Green. Another notable acheivement of Hellenic Br.XIX is that three such aircrafts flown on reconnaisanse mission spotted the famous Italian battalion "Julia" in November of 1940 giving the information for Julia positions to Hellenic Army to react. After a fight with much faster Italian fighters, only one of three aircrafts managed to land. After January 1941 all remaining Br.XIX they were painted in Dark Green, Light Earth, Sky Blue.

During that period, several types of French training aircraft were purchased. The hellenic variant of Morane-Saulnier of MS.137 series appears to be the MS.138, while also we had the MS.148 (of MS.147 series). These were in service with Army Aviation.
