Sometimes it´s too dangerous with a chainsaw. A stormdamaged tree could be a deathtrap. So use the right equipment is vital. Somtimes chainsaw, othter times a tractor, excavator with grappel or explosives. We do have some forestland and have had some storms causing havoc.

tractor with excavator equipment and 15 tons grappling hook, then use an chainsaw. oh it would be clever to add weight to the front part of the tractor.

I often use an small lift a can work from, so I can cut down the tree in bits. but if needed I just cut in an weak point at the base of the three, and let the tree do the rest.

Yes, safety first....Many brave men have been killed felling trees. We almost always let the harvesters do the harvest of large trees.
Thinning out is safer to do with chainsaw and the result is better too. A lagre harvester just fell way too many trees when used for thinning out forest...A small tractor with trailer is very useful as a forwarder handling pulpwood and firewood.. We use an 60 hp Ford 4630 with a 9 ton foresttrailer. Does the job great.

our tractor is so old the is no marking on it anymore, but it's enclosed with and full tank on top of the engine, and of course road workers orange! sadly I don't have any picture of it. but it looked funny.... It looked like an tractor ready to "troll" you!
