I came upon this topic in another forum where I am a member:
http://s3.zetaboards.com/Defense_Philip ... 7629878/1/
The forum topic includes a link to an article about the Philippine navy's interest in the aircraft carrier Principe de Asturias, which was recently decommissioned from the Spanish navy.
here is the article (in Spanish):

The entire article is wrong, if you read trough the article, you can read that the Philippine official didn't respond to the Spanish official when asked if they want the vessel. Translated to an easy language: Philippine official says no to that offer by not saying anything.

And how in **** shall they get money to operate it. For example we in Norway could have good use of a vessel like that and we have the money, but we will never have things like that because it's stupid to spend money on.

Someone have forgotten to take their pills. This is like if Luxembourg are to by an Nuclear submarine to patrol their lakes!

What I am saying is that Philippines doesn't have the infrastructure and money to have any aircraft carrier.

The point of the article is that we (the Philippines) don't need an aircraft carrier and it is better if we buy new frigates instead. If the PN would have a ship similar to an aircraft carrier, it would be a LHD, since the PN is planning to purchase strategic sealift vessels.

What happened to the Thai aircraft carrier? As I recall it was to expensive to operate, so is probably now rusting in dock.

They mothballed the airwing and yes it sits in dock and serves as a giant yacht barge. There is little chance it will ever be active again.

So, there you go: Hubris. Why any small navy would want to purchase an aircraft carrier is a 'no brainer'. This puts the Philippine's scuttle butt into perspective. ;)

The article concerning the possible purchase of the aircraft carrier is just media hype driven by wishful thinking. Of course given the budget and personnel of the Philippine Navy, it is very unlikely for this purchase to occour. It is more likley for the Philippine navy to purchase Landing Helicopter Dock ships than "true" aircraft carriers.
