Great letter! SEALS are cooler.
I know a Frogman age 78 (UDT/Frogmen became the Seals near the start of Viet Nam).
Dad's still good for about 3 minutes holding his breath. Taught me to do it, then I started smoking so I'm good for about 2 minutes now. A semi-meditative state underwater helps a lot...and learning how turn off the panic when everything shouts "Breath!"
He's got a buddy about 10 years younger, one of the early SEALS. He's a freak with equally freakish lung capacity and does about 4.5 minutes.
3 minutes is about the point where one can start starving the brain for mortals like us.
They make interesting dive partners...especially when they're with a group of retired UDT and SEALS. They don't do the lazy meandering of civilian divers, there's always some sort of mission. A wreck, a compass course, creating trouble, whatever. Whoever comes up with the most remaining air gets free drinks that night.
