This is not my submission for the challenge, but I am posting it in hopes that it might motivate drawings a little more adventurous than "I put RIM-55 in my Mk 13" :)

Still hoping to poke the thread into action ;)

I think the concept is frozen, and there's just fill-in to do (in actual real life, I bet UNREP stations and life rings and such are arranged after the major radars!). Many alterations from the original concept resulted from concerns about fore-and-aft trim.

A few notes...
  • In this era, the USN was very much into HF-band data links. I was happy to uncover Composite Discage Antenna Developed for 2-to-30 mc/s Band (PDF), which can cover this band entirely without resorting to fans and wire antennas and such. I'm still considering, e.g., a 10-30MHz sleeve antenna on the bow or something, but in theory HF can be entirely covered by this single discage. This is in keeping with concept drawings of the era.
  • I was similarly happy to discover that the New York Navy Yard, with its attendant 135' Brooklyn Bridge clearance limit, was closed in 1966 (and surely would have been understood to be departing somewhat sooner). This retirement made the main mast configuration possible (although I'm drawing it as a somewhat disassemble-able system, with everything above the bolted break lifted off by a Chinook or whatever)
  • Bracing this tall mainmast and electrically sensitive HF discage antenna is a set of non-conductive fiberglass tension rods, which is period-appropriate and probably functional.
  • SPS-49 is actually appropriate! It was first tested at sea in 1965. Two antennas feed the same CIC displays and such, again leveraging SPS-22 tech.
  • SPG-59 remains the 3400-element type.
  • Armament is two Mk 10 with four storage rings (the aft with a longer rammer) for Typhon LR (and ASROC forward), three Mk 13 for Typhon MR, and a single Mk 42. The three domed illuminators are quite notional, but they envision single-missile control out to maximum range, or height-finding when SPG-59 is powered down, or gun fire control. I think this is reasonable, actually.
  • Aviation fit is two SH-3. Hangar dimensions are taken from HMCS Iroquois.
I think this does not overweight or overvolume the underlying Long Beach hull or badly compromise the trim and balance, and it is reasonable according to the assumptions made for the purposes of the challenge.

Wow! Timothy´s candidate is enormous! and Erik´s ship is also very big. Is the big size dictated by the equally enormous energy requirements of the Typhoon and the associated radars?
