An interesting contrast in naval techs. It should be most enlightening to see if the British experiment and iteration in what is essentially an aviation support vessel (The Russian statement of their aircraft carrier's current naval mission is exactly so worded and the vessel is so described.), is successful. The usual mission of navies in this era, is operations other than war; that is anti-piracy patrol, humanitarian aid, show the flag, and "presence".

The QE2 is more akin to an LPH than a true aircraft carrier as it was understood in the past. If it is successful in that role, I think it will be a good thing, as this makes the ship extremely useful. Personally, though, I think the QE II might be a tad large for the purpose.
