Just an attempt to draw some Medieval warships, and ofcourse some of the most unknown and overlooked!

So my first drawing is a Dromon, unknown exactly date but something between 500-1000 AD.

A dromon (from Greek dromōn, "runner") was a type of galley and the most important warship of the Byzantine navy from the 5th to 12th centuries AD, when they were succeeded by Italian-style galleys. It was developed from the ancient liburnian, which was the mainstay of the Roman navy during the Empire. The ship size varies form 30m up to 50 m and from 50 oars to 100 oars.

More versions of the Dromon are to be drawn in the future. Any info or more accurate ideas are welcome.
Ofcourse if somebody likes to add his drawing on this post...go ahead!

Excellent work!
Older vessels from the early civilisations are certainly lacking in the archive and so are always welcome.

I was reading the other about a medieval text that suggested lobbing pots of vipers onto the decks of enemy ships as weapon!

Thanks a lot!

From the anchient times such kinds weapons were used in Sieges and Naval Battles...pots with vipers, hornets or scorpions. Even roten corpses or bodies of people who died due to plague, were catapulted inside the cities in order o cause deseases.

But the most fierce weapon of the Eastern Roman Empire from 5th century till 1453 was the Liquid Fire or Greek Fire. It was a solution which was launched from special machines called "Sifones" to the enemy and it was so flamable and very hard to extinquish it. The exact components of this solution are unknown due to the very well protected state secret of the time. more info here ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_fire

Here we have a medium size Dromon up to 40m , with two masts and a Latin sail. Two lines of oars per side and the classic casttles forward and amidships where the crossbow, catapults and Greek Fire Siphons were staged.

It's great to see such an under appreciated part of history being explored. What sources are you working from?
