History

The Mk 45 was successor mounting to the 5''/54 Mark 42. It was meant to offer significant improvements over reliability and maintainability, at the cost of rate of fire. The gun itself, the Mk 19, was developed from the Mk 18 gun in the Mk 42 mounting.

The Mk 45 mounting is an unmanned system, controlled from the Mk 86 GFCS or the Mk 160 Gun Computing System. It can be used against surface, shore or air targets.

The Mk 45 has also been exported to Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Spain, Turkey and Thailand. It was further developed into the 5"/62 Mk 45 Mod 4.

The Mk 45 was first used in the Spruance class, commissioned from 1971.
