History

The AN/SPS-17 was the first radar in the series consisting of the AN/SPS-28, AN/SPS-29, AN/SPS-37 and AN/SPS-43. These radars were meant to be long range 2D air search sets. They used the P-band frequency range. AN/SPS-17 was first adopted by large ships from 1957 onwards. A low power, shorter range radar for use on smaller ships was also developed, this was AN/SPS-28.
